Racing Incident Report

MAXIMUS, which was standing badly, began awkwardly and bumped the outside gate of its stall. When the gates opened, GREAT STAR got its head up, began awkwardly and lost ground. GOLD SANDFIELD was a little slow to begin. Near the 600 Metres, HARRY HARRY commenced to over-race, shifted out away from the heels of DIAMOND ERA and made contact with ZHI YOU SPIRIT which as a result caused both horses to become unbalanced. After the 300 Metres, LIVERBIRD, which was having difficulty obtaining clear running, was shifted to the outside of DIAMOND ERA, then after the 200 Metres was checked when crowded for room between EASY GAME which shifted in and DENDRANTHEMA LOVE which after initially laying in and racing tight with DIAMOND ERA was shifted out. In the circumstances, no action was taken. DENDRANTHEMA LOVE raced in a forward position but was wide and without cover throughout. For the major part of the race, MAXIMUS hung out. When questioned regarding the poor performance of BRAVE COMMANDER, a last start winner, Apprentice C K Tong said today the horse was sitting back when the gates opened, then bounded in the air and as a consequence did not begin as well as it usually does. He said as usual he rode along from his wide gate to lead, but had to make more use of the horse in the early stages then he had hoped to do so. He said after crossing to the lead near the 1400 Metres he then attempted to steady the tempo and when he did this GREAT STAR improved to race on his outside. He said after this BRAVE COMMANDER would not relax properly for him and as a consequence was not able to close the race off in what was a quickly run last section. F Coetzee (SHINING DAY) was unable to offer any explanation for the horse's performance. He said the horse's work had been good leading into today's race and the intention had been to lead if the pace was suitable, however, BRAVE COMMANDER which had drawn wider and was carrying a light weight was hard ridden to go forward, he therefore elected to allow that horse to cross in front of him. He said after this SHINING DAY did not travel well and in the Straight failed to finish the race off. He did say SHINING DAY in his opinion raced "flat" today. SHINING DAY was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. A veterinary inspection of SHINING DAY after the race did not show any significant findings. HARRY HARRY and CLASSA VICTORY were sent for sampling. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that BRAVE COMMANDER had lost its right hind plate.
