Racing Incident Report

When the gates opened, NORTHERN ROSE bounded in the air and lost considerable ground. DON RICARDO began awkwardly. Near the 1100 Metres, PARADIS was checked severely when crowded for room inside WINNING REWARD which itself was steadied when crowded for room inside HANDBAG PREMIER which at this time was carried in by GOOD BA BA which got its head on the side and initially shifted in away from MASTER YING before being carried in slightly by that horse which was awkwardly placed close to the heels of GREAT IDEA which was shifting across to the lead. In the opinion of the Stewards, whilst the check to PARADIS was one of significance, there were a number of circumstances involved in this incident, therefore no action was taken. Near the 600 Metres, NORTHERN ROSE, which had been travelling keenly, was checked away from the heels of BOLD WIN. At the 600 Metres, HANDBAG PREMIER was steadied when awkwardly placed close to the heels of GOOD BA BA. From on straightening until the 200 Metres, RICE FIELD was held up and unable to improve when racing behind SABRE AND GOLD and tight inside GOOD BA BA which itself was held up behind MASTER YING. When GOOD BA BA was held up in the early part of the Straight, WINNING REWARD, which was following, was also held up and unable to improve. For some distance after straightening, STRAIGHT VICTORY was held up and unable to improve. Also for some distance after straightening, HANDBAG PREMIER was unable to obtain clear running, then near the 200 Metres was steadied and shifted in away from the heels of DON RICARDO. Approaching and passing the 400 Metres, PARADIS was held up and unable to improve. Throughout the race, DON RICARDO and ZERO IN raced wide and without cover. Apprentice P H Lo (GREAT IDEA) said today from a wide barrier with the light weight he was instructed to if possible lead on the horse. He said if he was not able to lead he was given the option to sit in 2nd or 3rd position. He said in accordance with these instructions he rode GREAT IDEA along in the early stages to cross to the fence in the lead. HANDBAG PREMIER, PARADIS and NORTHERN ROSE were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of HANDBAG PREMIER and PARADIS after the race did not show any significant findings. NORTHERN ROSE, which performed poorly, was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, NORTHERN ROSE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. GOOD BA BA, STRAIGHT VICTORY and BOLD WIN were sent for sampling. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported WINNING REWARD had sustained a laceration to the right hind cannon.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 10 October 2005)
PARADIS, which performed poorly, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time there were no significant findings. PARADIS was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer A Lee this morning. He said at this time he noted the horse to be mildly lame in the left front leg. Before being allowed to race again, PARADIS will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
