Racing Incident Report

Prior to the running of Race 1, it was noted HEALTHY FRUITS had shifted its right hind plate in the holding stalls. HEALTHY FRUITS was re-plated and examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. TRAVEL LEADER began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped LIVERBIRD. Shortly after this, TRAVEL LEADER was crowded for room between LIVERBIRD and POSA which shifted in. As a result of this crowding, TRAVEL LEADER again made contact with LIVERBIRD, became unbalanced, shifted out and bumped POSA, causing both POSA and TRAVEL LEADER to lose ground. Near the 1100 Metres, STAR PRODIGY was steadied away from the heels of PROPELLOR. Also near the 1100 Metre, SABRE AND GOLD was steadied away from the heels of HEALTHY FRUITS which shifted out. For some distance after the 1000 Metres, when the pace of the race steadied, STAR PRODIGY was awkwardly placed inside the heels of GLORY YEARS and caused crowding on its inside to DON FELIPE. Near the 800 Metres, TRAVEL LEADER shifted out away from the heels of TOP SCORER. Making the turn at the 600 Metres, FLUVIUS CAMILLUS was carried wider by TRAVEL LEADER which shifted out away from the heels of SABRE AND GOLD. Also making the turn at the 600 Metres, DON FELIPE was crowded for room inside STAR PRODIGY which got its head on the side and shifted in when racing tight inside HEALTHY FRUITS. LIVERBIRD, which was following DON FELIPE, was steadied in consequence. Prior to straightening, LIVERBIRD was crowded for room inside TOP SCORER. At the 100 Metres, HAPPY ELITE, which had its head on the side and was hanging in, came into contact with DON FELIPE which was improving on its inside. When questioned, Mr D J Hall, trainer of TOP SCORER, said the horse previously had shown itself to over-race and not settle in races that were not run at a decent tempo. He said in the past TOP SCORER had not shown sufficient speed to cross from wide barriers and as a consequence had travelled wide and without cover on several occasions and overall had raced disappointedly. He said he therefore decided to start TOP SCORER in the 1200 Metre race tonight with a tongue tie applied hoping that that tempo of the race would allow the horse to relax and race more generously. He said when TOP SCORER drew a wide barrier it had been decided that the horse should be taken back at the start and ridden with cover. R Fradd said after beginning well, in accordance with his instructions, he took TOP SCORER back from a position outside SABRE AND GOLD to avoid racing wide. He said TOP SCORER after entering the Back Straight when the pace of the race steadied would not relax, over-raced and on a number of occasions shifted ground. He said because of the manner in which TOP SCORER had travelled in the early and middle stages the horse only closed the race off fairly. Mr Hall said when circumstances permit, it may be that TOP SCORER would race in the lead and endeavour to dictate the race, however, it would be over a further distance than the 1200 Metres of tonight's race. LIVERBIRD was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of LIVERBIRD after the race did not show any significant findings. DON FELIPE and HAPPY ELITE were sent for sampling.
