Racing Incident Report

SEASONS KNACK was slow to begin. From a wide gate, GOLD FIELD was taken across behind runners. At the 1000 Metres, GRAND CENTRAL became unbalanced when being steadied away from the heels of CHEERFUL HEART. At the 700 Metres, CHEERFUL HEART was disappointed for running between WONG'S FAVOURITE and MILLION SUCCESS. CELEBRATION, which was following, was steadied in consequence. On straightening, SEASONS KNACK and SPEEDING MOLLY were hampered and carried wider by AMSTERDAM which at this time shifted to the outside of LAZY BUDDIES into clear running. At the 250 Metres, GRAND CENTRAL, which was giving ground, became unbalanced when bumped by GOLD FIELD which itself shifted in when bumped by MILLENNIUM SPIRIT. M Odendaal (WONG'S FAVOURITE) explained the horse when racing from a rearward position had been showing little form, therefore he requested permission of the connections because the horse had drawn the outside barrier to lead if possible at a good tempo. He said the horse was bred on staying lines and he felt that given the horse's recent form riding in this manner might be of some benefit. D Nikolic (MILLION SUCCESS) said he had been told by Mr D J Hall, trainer of the horse, that MILLION SUCCESS had not been beginning well recently and as a consequence travelled well back and showed little interest. He said because of this today he was asked to give MILLION SUCCESS a good warm up behind the barriers in an attempt to have it begin on terms with the field. He said MILLION SUCCESS today began satisfactorily, he rode along in the early stages to ensure the horse remained interested in the race and as a consequence MILLION SUCCESS travelled in a prominent position. Mr Hall confirmed the instructions issued to D Nikolic and said he had been disappointed that the horse had been travelling so far back in its races. He said he did tell D Nikolic to ride MILLION SUCCESS aggressively, however, he was surprised to see the horse travel so far forward. EASY PUNCH was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of EASY PUNCH after the race did not show any significant findings. MAVERICK, MILLION SUCCESS and CELEBRATION were sent for sampling. An inquiry into the running and riding of EASY PUNCH was adjourned to a date to be fixed.
