Racing Incident Report

SAMBUCA was withdrawn on 2.11.07 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (right fore tendon injury) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter NILOMETER (E Saint-Martin). FAMOUS DANCER was also withdrawn on 2.11.07 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (sore left fore suspensory). Before being allowed to race again, SAMBUCA and FAMOUS DANCER will both be subjected to an official veterinary examination. HAIL THE STORM began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped SUPREME GAINS. FELLOWSHIP was slow into stride. Shortly after the start, SURVEY SURVEY, which failed to muster speed, was taken across behind runners. In the early stages, FLYING TAMARI was taken back to a position with cover. Near the 700 Metres, FLYING TAMARI was carried wider by JADE DRAGONFLY which shifted out when being steadied away from the heels of FELLOWSHIP. Making the Home Turn, HAWKES BAY hung out. In the early part of the Straight, TOWERING FEELING had some difficulty obtaining clear running. At the 400 Metres, SUPREME GAINS was momentarily steadied when awkwardly placed between HELENE PILLAGING which commenced to give ground and RIVER JORDAN which shifted out to obtain clear running. After the 400 Metres, JADE DRAGONFLY, which had been experiencing difficulty obtaining clear running, was steadied and shifted to the outside of NILOMETER to obtain clear running. At the 150 Metres, FLYING TAMARI, which was hanging in, was momentarily steadied when awkwardly placed inside the heels of DAVE’S BEST which shifted in. After this, FLYING TAMARI continued to hang in. Passing the 100 Metres, FELLOWSHIP got its head on the side and shifted in. Throughout the race, NILOMETER travelled wide and without cover. Mr D J Hall, trainer of HAWKES BAY, said as the horse was increasing distance from the 1400 Metres of its last start to 1600 Metres today and had a more favourable barrier draw, he had instructed B Prebble to go forward and obtain a position where the horse would travel comfortably. He said it was anticipated with NATURAL BLITZ in the field that the race would be run at a good tempo. He confirmed at the horse’s most recent run he had instructed G Boss from the outside barrier to ride the horse quietly. He said HAWKES BAY had been a difficult horse and its behaviour had not improved greatly since it had been gelded and because of this the horse could not be relied upon at all times to begin well. He said in races of 1600 Metres or longer in future, providing circumstances suited, HAWKES BAY would be ridden in a similar manner to today, however, in races of lesser distances the intention would be to have HAWKES BAY ridden more quietly. RIVER JORDAN and HAWKES BAY were sent for sampling. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported DAVE’S BEST was lame in the right front leg. Before being allowed to race again, DAVE’S BEST will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
