S1-1 BMW Doncaster Mile

PIERRO, the champion 3yo and the winner of five G1 races, remains in superb form and I feel the opposition he faces here is somewhat below normal standard for this race. I think he will be suited to track conditions no worse than good to yielding, so providing the track is suitable he really should be winning.

Despite winning a similar G1 mile handicap, the Emirates Stakes, at Flemington during the Spring Carnival, HAPPY TRAILS always seems a bit under-appreciated but he looks well suited to these conditions. He was beaten less than two lengths into sixth in this race last year and he’s a better horse now.

SOLZHENITSYN was a G1 winner in a race similar to this in Melbourne last October, the Toorak Handicap, and can be supported if you can forgive his most recent run at Rosehill behind PIERRO when things didn’t go his way and was not given a hard time. He has drawn low and is still fairly well weighted and ought to be nice win/place odds.

We witnessed NORZITA who won easily in the G1 Vinery Stud Stakes at Rosehill two weeks ago against rival 3yo fillies. Whilst this is a much tougher assignments, the race planning from her master trainer Bart Cummings should never be underestimated. Her wide gate needs not necessarily be a disadvantage if the track cuts up towards the inside.

APPEARANCE is doubtless a top quality filly having won her last three starts at G1 level against her own sex. Against the males in open company, however, she faces her toughest task yet but she could represent value from a middle barrier.

SELECTIONS: 2. PIERRO, 6. HAPPY TRAILS, 9. SOLZHENITSYN, 14. NORZITA & 11.APPEARANCE
