Rosehill Racecourse – Track Analysis (Golden Slipper Day):

Located in the northwest part of the metropolitan area, Rosehill Racecourse, besides Randwick, is yet another major racing venue in Sydney that features a unique, squarely 2048m turf strip. With a 27m wide homestretch that reaches 408m from the top of the lane to the finish, and its well-configured corners, this is basically an unbiased course with little undulation.

For the quintet of G1 prizes on deck this Golden Slipper Day – the featured 1200m Golden Slipper, the 1100m The Galaxy, the 1500m George Ryder Stakes, and both the 2000m Ranvet Stakes and the Rosehill Guineas – all fields will reach an intimidating first turn some 400-500m after the start. As full fields are no exceptions on this marquee day, horses breaking from out wide – especially for sprints at up to 1200m – pray for some luck on top of good effort to carve out a decent trip. Nonetheless, with a much steadier and sweeping final bend before hitting the top of the stretch, it is comparatively an easier task for closers to circle the field while attempting a wide move.

In the 2017 running of the Golden Slipper contested on heavy goings, the eventual winning quinella – SHE WILL REIGN and FROLIC – saved ground shortly after the break, in particular FROLIC, who anchored the field all the way until turning for home, and both got the inside tracks to launch their bids at the top of the lane, while TULIP and MENARI were late on the scene to check in third and fourth respectively from out wide.

Reviewing the most recent meeting at Rosehill on 17th March, when the turf was listed as good, most winners that day were either laying close to the speed, or simply gunning to the front early, and never relinquished their leads. With continued precipitation through in the Sydney area as of late, however, the strip will most probably turn soft again – even when the forecast is sunny for Saturday in the meantime – and evolving track conditions may have a last-minute bearing on final selections.
