Greyville Racecourse – Track Analysis (Greyville 2000 Day):

Durban’s Greyville Racecourse, a clockwise venue with a 2800m turf course that envelopes another synthetic strip, imitates a triangular configuration just like Great Britain’s Ascot Racecourse, with a 450m homestretch. Except for (i) the final corner just before reaching the top of the stretch, (ii) a slight uphill run from 2200m to 1800m, and then (iii) a gently downhill roll from then on to the 1200m marker, the course has no other major undulations, whereas closers do utilize that sweeping final bend to slingshot themselves to the thick of the fray from out wide.

For the featured Greyville 2000 and the Woolavington 2000 – both contested at 2000m – starters will have a 400m run before entering a full 1100m elbow that bears continuously right – until homeward bound. Typical of any deep routes, horses drawing high post numbers still often carve out some good trips – and this same notion holds likewise for the 2400m Lonsdale Stirrup Cup, where starters have even a longer section of 800m of the backside before hitting the turn.

In the 2017 edition of the Greyville 2000, the eventual tierce, racing towards the back of the pack early, stormed home from out wide down the stretch to reel in their opposition.

With sunny skies that will extend towards Saturday in the Durban, as per the latest forecasts, this year’s running of the Greyville 2000 Day would be contested on good turf, and deep closers would probably be poised for a field day – except when the strip does act lightning fast.
