Racing Incident Report
SPIRITUAL KING began awkwardly and shortly afterwards was crowded for room between SURE FORTUNE and GO GET THEM which shifted in. FULL TACK began awkwardly and shifted out abruptly. This caused inconvenience to COSMO STAR and MEDIPAL, both of which were carried wider. Approaching the 800 Metres, SURE FORTUNE and COSMO STAR proved difficult to settle. At the 700 Metres, BURST TO VICTORY was steadied when crowded for room between MEDIPAL which shifted in slightly and GO GET THEM which at this time was proving difficult to settle and shifted out. No action was taken. On straightening, SURE FORTUNE was steadied and shifted to the outside of CHOICE AND CHANCE to improve. This caused slight inconvenience to BURST TO VICTORY and MEDIPAL. From the outside barrier, throughout the race, CHOICE AND CHANCE was obliged to race wide and without cover and in the Straight gave ground. F Coetzee (MEDIPAL) said he had ridden the horse in its track work last Sunday and in his opinion this work was "perfect". He said the horse, which was having its first race start on the All Weather Track tonight, was edgy in the parade and this caused concern to the connections as this was unusual for the horse. He said after arriving at the Start MEDIPAL continued to be edgy and would not relax. He said as MEDIPAL is a speedy horse, it was anticipated he would ride it in a forward position, however, when the gates opened the horse began only fairly from its wide barrier, was unable to cross runners to its inside and in the early stages was obliged to race wide. He said after the 700 Metres he was able to shift in slightly, however, this meant he was still four wide in the run and before straightening MEDIPAL commenced to give ground. He said following the race in his opinion there did not appear to be anything amiss with MEDIPAL and he attributed tonight's poor performance to the horse being edgy prior to the race. MEDIPAL was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, MEDIPAL was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed the horse to be an early "roarer". The performance of MEDIPAL was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, MEDIPAL will be required to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. CHOICE AND CHANCE was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, CHOICE AND CHANCE was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No abnormalities were detected. GREAT COMMANDER and STAR WARRIOR were sent for sampling.
