Racing Incident Report

MONEY EXPRESS was slow to begin. For the major part of the race, GREAT KID was ridden along to go forward, however, was unable to clear DAILY BREAD and shift in to a position with cover behind HAIL WINNER and consequently raced three wide and without cover. Making the Home Turn, GREAT KID and GOOD BOY hung out. For some distance approaching and passing the 300 Metres, SPEED WINNER was held up and unable to obtain clear running between GOOD BOY and HAIL WINNER. After the 300 Metres, SPEED WINNER was shifted to the outside of HAIL WINNER to obtain clear running. As this happened, HAIL WINNER shifted out which provided running on its inside to NOBLE GLORY. After the 300 Metres, O Doleuze (TRI-STAR) dropped his whip. The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in while they considered whether PORT OF HOPE had had an unfair start. Consideration was also given to an application from P Payne, the rider of PORT OF HOPE and Mr C Fownes, the trainer of the horse that the horse be declared a non-runner as in their opinion it had had an unfair start. After viewing all the available films and considering the submissions put by Mr Fownes and P Payne, the Stewards were of the opinion that as the gates opened, PORT OF HOPE reared and consequently lost a considerable amount of ground at the start. The Stewards believed this was not an appropriate occasion on which they should exercise their powers under Rule 12(19). Before being allowed to race again, PORT OF HOPE will have to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test. F Coetzee (MULTI RANSOM) said after the start he took the horse back as intended where it travelled comfortably, however, shortly after entering the Back Straight and then for a considerable distance MULTI RANSOM made a very loud and in his opinion abnormal breathing noise. He said on straightening he took MULTI RANSOM to the outside in the hope that it would close the race off, however, at no stage did MULTI RANSOM respond to his riding. F Coetzee did report the horse making an abnormal breathing noise to the Veterinary Officer following the race. MULTI RANSOM was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of MULTI RANSOM after the race did not show any significant findings. PORT OF HOPE, NOBLE GLORY and SPEED WINNER were sent for sampling.
