Racing Incident Report
After arriving at the Start, B Prebble, the rider of ELFHELM, expressed concern over the horse's action during the preliminary. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. On jumping, METRO FLYER stumbled. FLYING SPRINTER began awkwardly, bumped the outside gate of its stall, then came into contact with FOREVER WIN. From the outside gate, CLEAN SWEEP began only fairly, was then ridden along, however, failed to muster speed and near the 1100 Metres was steadied to shift across behind runners to find a position with cover. In the early stages, TOP HEALTH hung in, then raced in a forward position but three wide and without cover. Prior to making the turn at the 800 Metres, ELFHELM was steadied when crowded for room inside WINNING PARADE (M Rodd) which improved its position inside the heels of HAPI HAPI. M Rodd was advised to exercise greater care than he had on this occasion. Near the 700 Metres, STAR OF LIHLIN was awkwardly placed close to the heels of WIN FORTUNE. For a short distance after the 400 Metres, CLEAN SWEEP had difficulty obtaining clear running. After the 200 Metres, SOLDIER ON was steadied and shifted out away from the heels of FOREVER WIN which shifted out slightly. Near the 100 Metres, STAR OF LIHLIN was steadied when awkwardly placed close to the heels of TOP HEALTH which was giving ground. Near the 50 Metres, METRO FLYER was momentarily steadied away from the heels of FLYING SPRINTER which shifted out. Just prior to the winning post, HAPI HAPI and HORSE AROUND brushed. F Coetzee (SOLDIER ON) said the intention had been to ride the horse in the lead if possible. He said after being boxed SOLDIER ON became fractious, he therefore sought the assistance of a gate attendant. He said shortly after receiving this assistance the gates opened, SOLDIER ON was still standing somewhat awkwardly and as a consequence began badly, got its head up, shifted out, bumped the hindquarters of HORSE AROUND and consequently lost ground. He said after this incident he decided to ride the horse quietly in the rear in the hope that it would be able to finish its race off. He said he had previously noted SOLDIER ON did not close its races off strongly and he thought to have ridden along to obtain a forward position in the early stages would have been detrimental to the horse's chances. F Coetzee concluded by saying when ridden quietly today SOLDIER ON again failed to finish the race off as he would have anticipated. The explanation submitted by F Coetzee was accepted. TOP HEALTH and STAR OF LIHLIN were sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, TOP HEALTH was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of mucus in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, TOP HEALTH will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of STAR OF LIHLIN after the race did not show any significant findings. HAPI HAPI and HORSE AROUND were sent for sampling.
