Racing Incident Report

AMBITION was slow to begin. Near the 800 Metres, SPEEDY EXPRESS was crowded for room inside SOUTHERN LIGHT which got its head on the side and shifted in away from THE WORLD OF LOVE. Making the turn at the 600 Metres, SOUTHERN LIGHT was crowded for room inside THE WORLD OF LOVE which got its head on the side and shifted in. Also making the turn at the 600 Metres, GRAND FIGHTER was steadied when awkwardly placed close to the heels of SOUTHERN LIGHT and tight inside DOWN FOR THE COUNT which at this time got its head on the side and shifted in. Prior to straightening, THE WORLD OF LOVE shifted in and bumped the running rail. After the 200 Metres, AMBITION, which was closing the race off nicely, was steadied and shifted to the outside of KEEN FLYER to continue going forward. B Prebble (DOWN FOR THE COUNT) said he had been instructed to ride the horse in a forward position. He said DOWN FOR THE COUNT began well, he allowed it to stride forward, however, it soon became apparent to him the horse would not show sufficient speed to hold out BILLET EXPRESS which was crossing from the outside. He said he therefore elected to steady DOWN FOR THE COUNT which was racing in a three wide position in an attempt to shift in and find cover behind THE WORLD OF LOVE which he was able to do near the 600 Metres. He said as soon as he obtained this position DOWN FOR THE COUNT, whilst it might have appeared to be travelling well, did not feel comfortable underneath him. He said in the Straight DOWN FOR THE COUNT did not respond when placed under pressure and gave ground noticeably after the 200 Metres. He said on pulling up following the race DOWN FOR THE COUNT felt unsteady on its feet. DOWN FOR THE COUNT and LUCKY TRIO were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of DOWN FOR THE COUNT and LUCKY TRIO after the race did not show any significant findings. Before being permitted to race again, DOWN FOR THE COUNT will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. BILLET EXPRESS and BULB KING were sent for sampling.
