Racing Incident Report

When the gates opened, CONSTELLATION bounded in the air and lost ground. WONDERFUL BOY began awkwardly and lost ground. FREE WAY was slow to begin. BRILLIANT WIN began awkwardly, got its head up, shifted out and bumped FORTUNE MAPLE. After the 1000 Metres, FORTUNE MAPLE was steadied away from the heels of WING FOOT which itself was steadied to shift in and obtain a position with cover. Near the 800 Metres, CHOICE AND CHANCE was momentarily steadied away from the heels of BRILLIANT WIN. At the 100 Metres, WING FOOT, which was laying in, was steadied away from the heels of PEACH BLOSSOM which shifted out when giving ground. In the Straight, STAR PRODIGY hung in, near the 100 Metres shifted ground abruptly. As a result, C Brown, its rider, stopped riding and straightened his mount. D Whyte (CONSTELLATION) and M Rodd (WING FOOT) were each fined $3,000 for improper use of the whip in that they raised wheal marks on the right thighs of their mounts. E Saint-Martin (CHOICE AND CHANCE) said he had been instructed to have the horse travelling where it was comfortable and should the horse begin well he took this to be in a forward position. He said in the past CHOICE AND CHANCE had not been the best to begin and when he had ridden it in a recent barrier jump-out the horse began very awkwardly, he therefore decided to ensure CHOICE AND CHANCE had plenty of free rein in an endeavour to have the horse begin cleanly. He said today CHOICE AND CHANCE began well and without having to make use of the horse was able to obtain a position behind the lead. Mr T W Leung, trainer of CHOICE AND CHANCE, confirmed the riding instructions issued to E Saint-Martin. He said form the inside barrier he felt it would be in the best interests of CHOICE AND CHANCE should the horse begin cleanly to obtain a forward position. He said his major concern was having the horse begin cleanly as in the past it had begun badly. Mr Leung did say in future he hopes to have the horse ridden in a forward position should it begin cleanly from a favourable draw. He said if CHOICE AND CHANCE draws wide to have it ridden in a forward position may require too much use to be made of the horse. Mr Leung was told his explanation would be reported and he was to ensure where possible horses trained by him are ridden consistently. FORTUNE MAPLE was sent for an official veterinary inspection. CONSTELLATION was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. A veterinary inspection of FORTUNE MAPLE and CONSTELLATION after the race did not show any significant findings. CHOICE AND CHANCE and STAR PRODIGY were sent for sampling.
