Racing Incident Report

QUIET CONFIDENCE was withdrawn on 26.5.12 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame right hind foot) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter MY MEMORY (T H So). Before being allowed to race again, QUIET CONFIDENCE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. SAFARI MAGIC was slow to begin. From a wide barrier, BILLION GAINS was taken across behind runners shortly after the start. Near the 1100 Metres, DUO GLORY, which was making ground after being slow to begin, shifted in abruptly when awkwardly placed close to the heels of FORTUNE STAR which itself was shifting in. In this incident, DUO GLORY shifted in and was awkwardly placed outside the heels of SHANGHAI PIONEER. For some distance passing the 1000 Metres, DUO GLORY raced greenly and shifted ground on a number of occasions when being steadied away from the heels of HAPPY CHAMPION. Near the 900 Metres, SHANGHAI PIONEER was checked after attempting to improve into a run between SPLENDID GUY and HOLYANGELHOLY which got its head up and shifted in abruptly when awkwardly placed close to the heels of HAPPY CHAMPION. In this incident, SHANGHAI PIONEER bumped the hindquarters of SPLENDID GUY which became unbalanced. A short distance later, HOLYANGELHOLY got its head up when awkwardly placed close to the heels of HAPPY CHAMPION. As the Stewards formed the opinion that there was no rider error involved in this incident, no further action was taken. Approaching the 200 Metres, SPLENDID GUY was shifted out away from the heels of TAKE THE RAP to obtain clear running. Throughout the race, MERIDIAN TREASURE travelled wide and without cover. When questioned, T Clark stated that he had been instructed, from barrier 13, to shift TRENDSETTER across behind runners in the early stages and to obtain cover on the horse. He said when he rode the horse at its first barrier trial in Hong Kong, it trialed well when ridden with cover in about a midfield position. He said at its most recent barrier trial, the horse over-raced when ridden in a prominent position and consequently Mr R Gibson, the horse’s trainer, felt that the horse did not finish off its trial. He said for this reason he was instructed to ensure that TRENDSETTER obtained cover today and was able to finish off the race. He said TRENDSETTER began very well and in the early stages proved difficult to settle. He said rounding the first turn he was caught wide and after the 800 Metres he had to steady TRENDSETTER further to obtain cover behind BILLION GAINS. He added when placed under pressure in the Straight TRENDSETTER finished off the race well, particularly over the concluding stages. He said that from a better barrier, it would be reasonably expected that TRENDSETTER may be able to obtain a more forward position than it did today, however, he is of the opinion that it would be suited by obtaining cover in order to assist it to settle in its races. After the race, D Whyte (DUO GLORY) reported that the horse was making an abnormal respiratory noise. A veterinary inspection of DUO GLORY including an endoscopic examination after the race did not reveal any significant findings. HAPPY CHAMPION and HOLYANGELHOLY were sent for sampling.
