Racing Incident Report

CHOICE EXCHEQUER was withdrawn on 7.11.17 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (left front tendon injury) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter HOLY UNICORN (A Badel). Before being allowed to race again, CHOICE EXCHEQUER will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
GOLD VELVET was crowded for room on jumping between HOLY UNICORN and SAVANNAH WIND which shifted out. A short distance later, GOLD VELVET and HOLY UNICORN were both crowded for room between WEALTHY FORTUNE and SAVANNAH WIND which continued to shift out.
Shortly after the start, MY FOLKS momentarily raced tight inside MY GIFT.
Passing the 1600 Metres, JIMSON THE FAMOUS, which was being ridden along to obtain a forward position, was crowded for room between MY FOLKS which was taken out by MY GIFT and DOUBLE POINT which got its head on the side and shifted in away from LE PEGASE.
After the 1200 Metres, DOUBLE POINT was left racing wide and without cover.
For some distance in the middle stages, MY FOLKS travelled keenly in the lead.
Rounding the Home Turn, G-ONE UNION was checked away from the heels of MY FOLKS which commenced to give ground. GOLD VELVET, which was following G-ONE UNION, was severely checked away from the heels of that horse in consequence and in doing so shifted out abruptly and bumped ROCK THE TREE. HOLY UNICORN, which was following ROCK THE TREE, was checked away from the heels of that horse in consequence.
Also rounding the Home Turn, SAVANNAH WIND was awkwardly placed close to the heels of LE PEGASE (M L Yeung) which shifted out. M L Yeung was warned against the practice of allowing his mounts to shift ground unnecessarily.
Passing the 250 Metres, BEST JADE TRIUMPH raced in restricted room inside MY FOLKS which shifted in when continuing to give ground.
Close to the finishing line, HOLY UNICORN was directed out away from the heels of MY GIFT to continue improving.
Mr C W Chang, the trainer of MY FOLKS, explained that as the horse had been particularly disappointing in failing to win a race in Hong Kong, he instructed M Chadwick to obtain a forward position if possible to see whether this would benefit the horse.
When questioned regarding the performance of LE PEGASE, M L Yeung stated that in its previous races the horse had been able to obtain a forward position without having to be hard ridden and consequently had been able to finish off its races. He said tonight, from the outside barrier, he had to ride LE PEGASE along for a considerable distance in the early stages to clear runners to its inside in order to obtain a forward position. He said after being able to shift in to race outside MY GIFT which was positioned behind the leader, LE PEGASE did not travel as well as it had previously mainly due to the race being run at a solid tempo. He added LE PEGASE came under pressure prior to the Home Turn and then was not able to finish off the race. He said, in his opinion, LE PEGASE’s disappointing performance could be attributed to the amount of use he had to make of the horse in the early stages. A veterinary inspection of LE PEGASE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of LE PEGASE was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, LE PEGASE will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of GOLD VELVET immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
GOLD VELVET, ROCK THE TREE and WEALTHY FORTUNE were sent for sampling.
