Racing Incident Report
SHINING ON began awkwardly, shifted out and made contact with HAPPY ROCKY and then soon after the start was steadied when tightened between HAPPY ROCKY and C P POWER which shifted out.
From a wide barrier, HAPPY HOUR was steadied in the early stages and shifted across behind runners.
CHARITY WINGS travelled wide and without cover from approaching the 1000 Metres until the 600 Metres.
At the 900 Metres, FLASH FAMOUS was awkwardly placed close to the heels of GODSPEED.
Approaching the 600 Metres, despite being ridden along, NABOO STAR lost ground when unable to maintain its position outside SHINING ON which shifted to the outside of FLASH FAMOUS to improve its position.
At the 250 Metres, NABOO STAR and RIGHT HONOURABLE raced tight as NABOO STAR was directed to the outside of the heels of CHARITY WINGS which commenced to tire. HAPPY HOUR, which was following NABOO STAR, shifted in abruptly away from the heels of that horse in consequence. When improving into tight running between CHARITY WINGS and GODSPEED at the 200 Metres, HAPPY HOUR was momentarily crowded due to GODSPEED shifting out slightly under pressure. Due to contact on its hindquarters from HAPPY HOUR, GODSPEED continued to shift out despite the efforts of it rider, resulting in HAPPY HOUR being taken out onto CHARITY WINGS which in turn shifted out, resulting in NABOO STAR being checked near the 100 Metres when unable to maintain its position inside RIGHT HONOURABLE. As there was no rider error involved in this incident, no further action was taken.
HAPPY HOUR shifted in a number of horses after the 100 Metres before being corrected by its rider just prior to the winning post.
A Domeyer (C P POWER) was fined $5,000 for improper use of the whip in that he raised weal marks over the horse’s right flank.
When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on GODSPEED, L Hewitson stated that in pre-race discussions with Trainer D J Hall, he was advised that as two of the favoured runners NABOO STAR and CHARITY WINGS were expected to race close to the pace, it was felt that it would be in GODSPEED’s best interests to also be ridden prominently, ideally in the first four runners. He said he rode GODSPEED positively in the early stages in order to comply with his instructions and was able to cross CIRCUIT NUMBER ONE and FLASH FAMOUS prior to the 1200 Metres and assumed the lead before allowing ENJOY LIFE to take over the leading role. He added GODSPEED then travelled comfortably in the box seat, however, was one-paced in the Straight.
When questioned regarding the performance of NABOO STAR, J Moreira stated that the horse settled well in a midfield position however, along the Back Straight dropped the bit and was unable to hold its position outside of SHINING ON which shifted out. He said whilst NABOO STAR travelled only fairly from that point until approaching the Home Turn, the horse commenced to respond to his hard riding in the early part of the Straight. He said however that after initially being awkwardly placed behind the tiring CHARITY WINGS, NABOO STAR was then checked near the 100 Metres and as a result lost all momentum and as the horse was out of contention, he did not ride it out over the concluding stages. A veterinary inspection of NABOO STAR immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of CHARITY WINGS immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
NABOO STAR, FLASH FAMOUS and SHINING ON were sent for sampling.
