Background: Having joined The Hong Kong Jockey Club’s Apprentice Jockeys’ School in 2017, Angus Chung began his overseas training in South Australia at the end of 2019. Attached to the stable of trainer Jon O’Connor, Chung began race riding in early 2021 and made rapid progress, recording 76 wins from 689 rides at a strike rate of 11.1%. Returning to Hong Kong for the 2022/23 season, Chung was indentured to legendary Hong Kong trainer Tony Cruz. He soon opened his Hong Kong account with a first win aboard Quadruple Double, and his apprentice claim was reduced to 7lb following his 20th Hong Kong win aboard Top Top Tea in 2023. He ended his debut Hong Kong campaign with 31 wins. Chung returned in 2023/24 and enjoyed even greater success, notably riding 46 winners and securing a first Tony Cruz Award as the season’s leading homegrown jockey. He rode his 95th winner, Star Satyr, on 8 June, after which his claiming allowance was reduced to two pounds. He closed out the 2024/25 season with 20 wins. |
