Racing Incident Report
The start was delayed as EMPEROR was difficult to load. EMPEROR then tailed off. The performance of EMPEROR was considered unacceptable. Before the horse can race again, it will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial. When the gates opened, AFICIONADO bounded in the air. NIFTY DANCER was slowly away. In the early and middle stages, SKYSTONE hung in. As a consequence of this, some inconvenience was caused to GRAND FIGHTER near the 700 Metres. When GRAND FIGHTER steadied near the 700 Metres, some inconvenience was caused to FOREVER HERO which got its head up and became unbalanced. Approaching and rounding the Home Turn, BABY WAVE SUPREME had a tendency to lay out. When questioned, W Woods (AFICIONADO) said today from an outside gate he had been instructed by the Trainer to allow the horse to leave the gates quietly, endeavour to ensure that it was settled, find cover and give the horse a chance in the run. He said AFICIONADO jumped satisfactorily and in accordance with the instructions given him he restrained the horse into a rearward position, but was not able to settle it and in the middle stages particularly AFICIONADO over-raced and was awkwardly placed close to the heels of EMPEROR. He said in the middle stages he was able to make ground between other runners, but then in the early part of the Straight when following MEDIC HERO, he did anticipate that horse would take him further forward than it actually did. He said he was not able to shift from behind MEDIC HERO because he was travelling inside the heels of QUICK STEP and to get out and find an uninterrupted running he had to steady AFICIONADO and then come out. Whilst the explanations submitted by W Woods were accepted, he was told his riding at a vital stage had today come under some notice and he must endeavour to ride all his mounts in a manner which leaves no room for query whatsoever. AFICIONADO was sent for clinical veterinary examination and routine testing. After the race, the Veterinary Surgeon said AFICIONADO was lame in its near side front leg. Before AFICIONADO can race again, the horse will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
