Racing Incident Report

KING HORSE was withdrawn on 24.12.01 on veterinary grounds (lame off fore). Before racing again, KING HORSE will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. The start was delayed as ELLEN'S WON was difficult to load into its stall. The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in as they thought it necessary to establish if ELLEN'S WON had had an unfair start. It was established that when the gates opened, ELLEN'S WON stood flat-footed, refused to jump away and had to be led from the gates. Accordingly a breach of Rule 12(19) did not occur and weighed-in was semaphored, confirming the Judge's placings. Before being allowed to race again, ELLEN'S WON will be required to perform satisfactorily in two official barrier trials. Mr I W Allan, trainer of ELLEN'S WON, will be told if the horse performs in a similar fashion again, serious consideration will be given to having the horse compulsorily retired. WATCH ME WIN left the gates very awkwardly, threw its head about and shifted in abruptly. As a consequence of this, LUCKY VICTORIES was checked. The occurrence was accidental. APRIL HARE bounded in the air at the start and threw its head about, then in the early stages continued to race very greenly and at about the 1000 Metres became badly unbalanced when being steadied away from the heels of PLEASANT SUCCESS. PLEASANT SUCCESS also came out badly and threw its head around. In the early stages, CHINA LEGEND pulled hard and proved very difficult to settle, and running towards the first turn shifted out abruptly from behind BLACK CARBINE and bumped WISHES, obliging that horse to race considerably wider. Also in the early stages, AUTHORISED over-raced and pulled. Rounding the Home Turn and in the Straight, BLACK CARBINE hung in badly. In the Straight, OPERATION HUMOUR hung in and proved somewhat difficult to ride out. D Dunn (ORLANDO FLYER) explained the intention was to ride the horse somewhere in about the 5th or 6th position if possible. He said however from a difficult gate he was caught wide early and with not a lot of speed on he thought he had little alternative but to allow the horse to stride forward and race outside the leader. He said this was against the horse's recent racing pattern and when travelling outside the leader the horse was inclined to pull and hang out. He did say in all the circumstances ORLANDO FLYER hung on well over the concluding stages, but if it had drawn better the horse would have been ridden away from the lead.
