Racing Incident Report

After arriving on course, it was noted EVER MORE had abrasions to the bridge of the nose. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Officer and considered suitable to race. DON FELIPE and WINWIN COMBO were slow to begin. Shortly after the start, WINWIN COMBO was checked when crowded for room inside SIR OCTAVIUS which was carried in by JOLLY GOOD FORTUNE which in turn was carried in by HELENE ELEGANCE (W Woods) which shifted ground when not properly clear. In the circumstances, it was decided that W Woods be reprimanded and advised to exercise more care. After the 900 Metres, SUPREME MOLLY was steadied when awkwardly placed outside the heels of HELENE ELEGANCE which shifted out away from the heels of SENSIBLE WAY (A Marcus) which shifted in when not properly clear. A Marcus was reprimanded and told to ensure he was properly clear before shifting ground. Making the turn at the 600 Metres, PAOBRIDGE became unbalanced when racing tight inside JOLLY GOOD FORTUNE. Making the Home Turn, SUPREME MOLLY was awkwardly placed inside the heels of HELENE ELEGANCE. For the major part of the race, LIGHTNING BOLT raced wide and without cover. When questioned, S Dye (SIR OCTAVIUS) said it was anticipated PAOBRIDGE would lead the race tonight and he intended to follow that horse during the run. He said it was also anticipated SIR OCTAVIUS would finish the race off strongly and was considered a strong chance. He said SIR OCTAVIUS began fairly, he rode along in the early stage, looked to his inside and saw PAOBRIDGE being hard ridden to go forward, therefore after the 800 Metres allowed that horse to go forward of him and he shifted towards the rail. He said he then rode along for a short distance in an endeavour to have SIR OCTAVIUS improve onto the back of PAOBRIDGE and this allowed SUPREME MOLLY to shift to a two wide position on his outside to follow JOLLY GOOD FORTUNE. He said near the 700 Metres he was not concerned when racing three back on the rail after SENSIBLE WAY had crossed PAOBRIDGE in the lead as he was firmly of the belief that the going near the rail was the superior ground. He said however shortly after this making the turn after the 600 Metres PAOBRIDGE did not maintain its position to the inside of JOLLY GOOD FORTUNE, came back and as a result this allowed JOLLY GOOD FORTUNE to cross to the rail in front of PAOBRIDGE. He said immediately when this happened he became concerned and he shifted away from the fence to follow SUPREME MOLLY. He said on straightening clear running was available directly in front of him to the inside of LIGHTNING BOLT, he commenced to ride along to go forward, however, as he got to the inside of the heels of LIGHTNING BOLT, that horse shifted in which caused him to be disappointed for a run between it and HELENE ELEGANCE. He said he immediately shifted to the inside of HELENE ELEGANCE in the hope of being able to obtain clear running between that horse and SUPREME MOLLY. He said at the time of shifting to the inside of HELENE ELEGANCE, SUPREME MOLLY shifted out slightly and in his opinion there was not sufficient room for him to improve as it was restricted room and SUPREME MOLLY was showing an inclination to shift out. Mr J Size, the trainer of SIR OCTAVIUS, confirmed the manner in which it was intended to have the horse ridden and said after viewing the video he was completely satisfied with S Dye's riding. He said in his opinion if there would be any criticism directed at S Dye for his riding particularly in the early stages of the race, it could simply be that he was a victim of circumstances in that PAOBRIDGE did not show its usual early speed. S Dye was told while his decision to shift to the fence in the early stages in the circumstances might be reasonable, his riding in the early part of the Straight, particularly his decision to look for inside runs, had firmly come under the notice of the Stewards. He was also told he must take measures throughout the race to ensure he has uninterrupted running or in the alternative if he looks for inside runs he must be fully committed as opportunities present themselves. SIR OCTAVIUS was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of SIR OCTAVIUS after the race did not show any significant abnormalities. PAOBRIDGE was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, PAOBRIDGE was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said there were no significant abnormalities. ALWAYS WELCOME and SENSIBLE WAY were sent for sampling.
