Racing Incident Report

After arriving at the barriers, ASALI, which had blood present in its mouth, was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon. He said the blood resulted from a loosened tooth and in his opinion the horse was suitable to race. ASALI, which was standing badly, began awkwardly and got its head up. NOBLE BOSS was slow to begin. On jumping, COP HILL LAD was bumped by CLASSA WIN which shifted out. Also on jumping, BYRON, which had drawn the outside barrier, was immediately steadied and shifted across behind runners to a position close to the rail but at the rear. Making the Home Turn, MAGIC MAIL was awkwardly placed close to the heels of COP HILL LAD. The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in as they were of the prima facie view that an incident had occurred in the final 100 Metres which cast sufficient doubt on whether SAMBUCA should be declared the winner of the race. A Marcus, the rider of MY CHOICE, 2nd placegetter, also lodged a protest/objection against SAMBUCA (D Dunn) being declared the winner alleging interference to his mount over the final 150 Metres. The Stewards on all the available evidence were of the opinion whilst SAMBUCA shifted some ground over about the final 50 Metres and hampered MY CHOICE as a result of making contact with that horse, they did not consider, bearing in mind the margin between the two horses at the finish, that MY CHOICE would have finished in front of SAMBUCA had the interference which did take place not occurred. Accordingly the protest/objection was overruled and the Judge's placings as semaphored were confirmed. At a subsequent inquiry, D Dunn was advised in similar circumstances he would be expected to stop riding and straighten his mount. Apprentice C K Tong (GOOD HEART) explained he had been instructed to allow the horse to settle and race where it was comfortable. He said GOOD HEART did not begin well and in the early stages he became aware ASALI which had drawn to his outside was going forward and he therefore elected to ride his mount along to maintain a position to the inside of that horse and prevent it from shifting to the fence in front of him. Mr C Fownes, the trainer of GOOD HEART and also the allocated trainer of Apprentice Tong, confirmed the riding instructions issued. He said the intention has always been and will be into the future to have GOOD HEART ridden where it is comfortable without pressure being applied to it in the early stages. He said on this occasion the horse travelled more forward than he had intended. G Mossé (MAGIC MAIL) was told whilst his mount had been properly tested and was well beaten, he should refrain from the practice of standing up on his mounts well short of the winning post. SAMBUCA and MY CHOICE were sent for sampling.
