Racing Incident Report

NOBLE BOSS was slow to begin. AWARD was slow to begin and then lost further ground when steadied away from the heels of ATHLETIC GOLD. Apprentice H W Lai (TELECOM SUPERBOSS) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 1200 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of GANBARIA which as a result was crowded for room and lost its rightful running and in turn caused crowding on its inside to FIGS which as a consequence was carried in across the rightful running of VITALITY CHAMP which was checked. In the circumstances of this case, the Stewards believed the appropriate penalty was for Apprentice Lai's licence to ride in races to be suspended for a period to expire on Monday 10 October 2005 on which day he may resume race riding (3 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Happy Valley racemeeting next Wednesday 28 September 2005. Near the 700 Metres, NOBLE BOSS was steadied when disappointed for running inside RED FORTUNE. After this, NOBLE BOSS was shifted to the outside of RED FORTUNE and hung in until after straightening when it then commenced to hang out. Passing the 400 Metres, QUICK NEWS was unable to improve when awkwardly placed inside COULDN'T CARE LESS and behind VITALITY CHAMP. Throughout the race, LUCKY DRAGON raced wide and without cover. When questioned, Apprentice P H Lo (ATHLETIC GOLD) said from the outside barrier he had been instructed to have the horse come across and find a position with cover. He said ATHLETIC GOLD caught him unawares by beginning best and he immediately restrained his mount which as a result got its head up. He said when he restrained ATHLETIC GOLD it lost further ground than he had initially intended and he then shifted across behind the field to a position on the fence but detached at the rear. Mr S Woods, trainer of ATHLETIC GOLD and also allocated trainer of Apprentice Lo, said the intention had been to have the horse somewhere around mid-division. He said in his opinion it was important for Apprentice Lo to do his utmost to obtain a position with cover as ATHLETIC GOLD had not been finishing its races off in recent times. Mr Woods said in his opinion Apprentice Lo had overdone the instructions by restraining ATHLETIC GOLD after the horse began well to the extent which he did. Mr Woods did add ATHLETIC GOLD was entered for a race at Happy Valley next Wednesday and will again be ridden by Apprentice Lo where the intention depending on the horse's barrier draw will be to have it ridden with cover. Apprentice Lo was severely reprimanded and told his riding in the early stages was not up to the required standard, however, having in mind his level of experience the Stewards did not consider appropriate in the circumstances to proceed further with the matter. He was also told any repetition may lead to him being charged with a breach of a serious Rule of Racing. COULDN'T CARE LESS was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of COULDN'T CARE LESS after the race did not show any significant findings. QI'S PET and CHECK MATE were sent for sampling.
