Racing Incident Report
MOMENTUM, Standby Declared Starter, was withdrawn on 25.4.06 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (sore both fore suspensory ligament). ISLAND SPIRIT was slow to begin. When the gates opened, DANRIVA stood flat-footed and lost a considerable amount of ground. Then approaching the winning post on the first occasion, DANRIVA was steadied to avoid the heels of OH GREAT which shifted in when not quite clear. At the 1300 Metres, CHINA SPORTFIELD was steadied to avoid the heels of LIVERBIRD (Apprentice K T Yeung) which shifted in when not properly clear. Apprentice Yeung was advised to exercise greater care. After this, CHINA SPORTFIELD raced ungenerously and got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of LIVERBIRD which itself was being steadied to allow TRIUMPH to cross to the fence. MR GENKI, which was following CHINA SPORTFIELD, was steadied to avoid the heels of that runner. Throughout the race, CHAMP DRAGON travelled wide and without cover, commenced to give ground from the 600 Metres and finished tailed out. CHAMP DRAGON was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of CHAMP DRAGON after the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of CHAMP DRAGON was considered unacceptable. Before being permitted to race again, CHAMP DRAGON will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. For some distance after the 600 Metres, KNIGHT TEMPLAR lost ground when being steadied to avoid the heels of CHAMP DRAGON which was giving ground. CHINOOK, which was following KNIGHT TEMPLAR, was also steadied when close to the heels of that runner. Making the Home Turn, OH GREAT bumped the running rail when awkwardly placed close to the heels of MR GENKI. After the 200 Metres, ISLAND SPIRIT was steadied away from the heels of CHINA SPORTFIELD which shifted out. At the 100 Metres, OH GREAT got its head on the side and shifter wider. Prior to the winning post, GLOBE RIVER and CHINA SPORTFIELD bumped. W C Marwing (CHINOOK) explained from the outside barrier he was instructed to endeavour to go forward on the horse, however, if the horse did not have sufficient speed, he should do his utmost to ensure he did not travel wide without cover. He said CHINOOK did begin awkwardly and because of this he elected to take his mount back to ensure it had cover and as a consequence travelled further back than was anticipated. FANTASTIC WIN and MR GENKI were sent for sampling. After the race, it was reported MR GENKI was severely lame in the left front leg. Before being allowed to race again, MR GENKI will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
