Racing Incident Report

LEGEND EXPRESS was withdrawn on 27.4.13 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame right hind) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter ALL ROUND (Apprentice C Y Lui). Before being allowed to race again, LEGEND EXPRESS will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
PERI PERI SAFFRON began awkwardly and lost ground.
ALL ROUND and YOUNG WARRIOR bumped heavily at the start.
From wide barriers, EPEE DE HUA and CRUISE CONTROL were taken across behind runners shortly after the start.
Near the 1300 Metres, REAL CHAMPION was momentarily steadied away from the heels of DREAM PARTNER (O Doleuze) which shifted in. O Doleuze was reprimanded and advised to exercise more care.
Apprentice C Y Lui (ALL ROUND) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 1100 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of REAL CHAMPION, causing that horse to be checked and to lose the running to which it was rightfully entitled. Apprentice Lui was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Sunday, 12 May 2013 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Sha Tin racemeeting on Sunday, 5 May 2013. In assessing penalty, the Stewards were mindful of the racing manners of REAL CHAMPION in the lead up to this incident.
Passing the 900 Metres, ALL ROUND was steadied away from the heels of AFFECTION (W C Marwing) which shifted in when not properly clear. W C Marwing was reprimanded and advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
W C Marwing (AFFECTION) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 850 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of DREAM PARTNER, causing that horse to be checked and to lose the running to which it was rightfully entitled. W C Marwing was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Sunday, 12 May 2013 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Sha Tin racemeeting on Sunday, 5 May 2013. In addition, W C Marwing was fined $40,000 in lieu of a suspension for a period incorporating one further raceday.
In the middle stages, JUN JU travelled wide and without cover.
Near the 650 Metres, BACKSTREET FIGHTER was awkwardly placed close to the heels of REAL CHAMPION.
Approaching the 300 Metres, FRESH AIR was steadied away from the heels of BACKSTREET FIGHTER after being disappointed for running between that horse and JUN JU.
Over the concluding stages, CRUISE CONTROL was awkwardly placed outside the heels of ALL ROUND.
Also over the concluding stages, NO TIES got its head on the side and hung in under pressure.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of YOUNG WARRIOR, D Whyte stated that after the 1200 Metres he had to make more use of the horse in order to clear runners to his inside and obtain a position closer to the rail. He said he was able to clear ALL ROUND approaching the 800 Metres at which point he shifted in to race outside the leader, AFFECTION. He said after this YOUNG WARRIOR travelled comfortably and he expected the horse to still race well despite the extra work that had been required to make in the early stages. He added he placed YOUNG WARRIOR under pressure after the 400 Metres and the horse initially responded well to his riding, however, came under heavy pressure after the 300 Metres and then did not close off its race. He said over the final 200 Metres when giving ground, YOUNG WARRIOR got its head up which indicated to him that the horse may have an issue. A veterinary inspection of YOUNG WARRIOR immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. Before being allowed to race again, YOUNG WARRIOR will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
After the race, K C Leung (PERI PERI SAFFRON) reported that his mount did not travel well throughout the race and when placed under pressure in the Straight did not respond to his riding and was disappointing. A veterinary inspection of PERI PERI SAFFRON immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
Also after the race, an endoscopic examination was conducted on EPEE DE HUA at the request of Trainer A T Millard. The Veterinary Surgeon said this examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, EPEE DE HUA will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
YOUNG WARRIOR, BACKSTREET FIGHTER and JUN JU were sent for sampling.
