Racing Incident Report
SYLLABUS, which was fractious in the barriers, was removed from the stalls and examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said it was suitable to race. Before being allowed to race again, SYLLABUS will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial. METRO FLYER shifted out at the start and hampered FASHION JEWELLERY and DON FELIPE which began awkwardly. NOBLE HEART began awkwardly and lost ground. On jumping, UNIVERSAL PIONEER stumbled and took some time to re-balance and as a consequence got further back than is usual. At the 1200 Metres, DON FELIPE and UNIVERSAL PIONEER were momentarily crowded for room inside ABLE MARS which momentarily shifted in. After this incident, DON FELIPE proved difficult to settle and making the turn at the 800 Metres was checked when awkwardly placed close to the heels of LUCKY CORDELIA. In the middle stages, METRO FLYER, which was inclined to lay out, was awkwardly placed inside the heels of LUCKY CORDELIA. Over the concluding stages, WISE CHOICE hung in. At the winning post, FASHION JEWELLERY was bumped by NOBLE HEART which improved on its inside. D Holland (HEROIC ATTRIBUTE) said he had been instructed to ride the horse in midfield. He said after beginning well he steadied HEROIC ATTRIBUTE in an attempt to find a midfield position with cover. He said shortly after the start UNIVERSAL PIONEER and DON FELIPE improved to his inside and he felt that he would be left racing wide without cover, he therefore elected to come back and follow those horses and as a consequence was further back than instructed. He said he soon became concerned that the race would only be run at a moderate pace and he therefore decided to commence improving his position at the 600 Metres, shift away from the rail and on straightening come to the outside of the field to ensure uninterrupted running. He said after the 600 Metres when the field quickened, HEROIC ATTRIBUTE was left flat-footed and finished the race off somewhat one-paced. Mr C S Shum, trainer of HEROIC ATTRIBUTE, confirmed the instructions issued to D Holland. He said last start when ridden in a forward position HEROIC ATTRIBUTE had disappointed with the manner in which it finished the race off, therefore it was hoped being ridden more quietly would allow the horse to close the race off strongly today. Mr Shum did say he accepted there were circumstances in today's race which resulted in HEROIC ATTRIBUTE being ridden further back than intended and added it will be his intention to have the horse ridden in midfield in the immediate future. HEROIC ATTRIBUTE and UNIVERSAL PIONEER were sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, HEROIC ATTRIBUTE was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of mucus in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, HEROIC ATTRIBUTE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. After the race, UNIVERSAL PIONEER was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse was making an abnormal breathing noise. WISE CHOICE and LUCKY CORDELIA were sent for sampling.
