Racing Incident Report

COUNTRY CHARM was withdrawn on 7.3.13 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame left fore) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter GREEN MANNER. Before being allowed to race again, COUNTRY CHARM will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
STREET CAT was slow to begin.
KING’S PACT began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped the hindquarters of ADORATION.
Shortly after the start, HO IN ONE was steadied when crowded for room between GOOD GOOD VIEW and WINNING APEX which shifted out.
From a wide barrier, SUDDEN THUNDER was taken across behind runners shortly after the start.
D Whyte (FLAGSHIP SHINE) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that after the 1200 Metres stages he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of DRAGON BACHELOR, resulting in that horse being hampered and taken in across the rightful running of CALLING WITH LOVE which was checked and in turn was taken in onto VITAL GOLD which was badly hampered. In this incident, GREEN MANNER, STREET CAT and HO IN ONE, which were following, were badly hampered and KING’S PACT, which was following HO IN ONE, got its head up when being severely checked away from that horse. D Whyte was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Tuesday, 2 April 2013 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Sha Tin racemeeting on Sunday, 24 March 2013. In addition, D Whyte was fined $40,000 in lieu of a suspension for a period incorporating one further raceday.
After the 1100 Metres, DRAGON BACHELOR was left racing wide and without cover.
When questioned regarding his riding of GOOD GOOD VIEW, Z Purton stated that, from barrier 10, he had been asked to ride the horse in a midfield position with cover if possible. He said at its most recent start when successful he had been instructed to ride the horse in a more forward position as the horse on that occasion was in Class 4 and it was felt that in that grade it would be able to overcome a wide run if it were to be left without cover. He said up in grade today, Mr C H Yip, the trainer of the horse, did not believe that GOOD GOOD VIEW would be similarly able to travel wide and without cover and finish off the race as it did at its most recent start. He said in accordance with his instructions he commenced to shift GOOD GOOD VIEW across behind WINNING APEX in the early stages to ensure that it obtained cover as this was the integral part of his instructions. He said after shifting GOOD GOOD VIEW across behind that horse near the 1200 Metres, GOOD GOOD VIEW then commenced to race ungenerously which was accentuated by the fact that WINNING APEX was then steadied by its rider. He said after the 1200 Metres GOOD GOOD VIEW raced intractably for some distance, locked its jaw and would not respond to his attempts to have it shift in and remain racing behind WINNING APEX. He said approaching the 1000 Metres GOOD GOOD VIEW was bumped by KING’S PACT which shifted out when also racing ungenerously, but he said that this was of little significance as GOOD GOOD VIEW was already proving very difficult to manage. He said GOOD GOOD VIEW continued to race intractably and it was not until after the 800 Metres that he was able to shift the horse back in behind WINNING APEX. He added however that the circumstances of the race to this point had resulted in GOOD GOOD VIEW racing further back in the field than had been intended. He said in the early part of the Straight he shifted GOOD GOOD VIEW out with the intention to obtain clear running outside CALLING WITH LOVE, however, GOOD GOOD VIEW hung in badly and would not shift to the outside of CALLING WITH LOVE. He said rather than continue to fight GOOD GOOD VIEW, he allowed the horse to shift in and attempted to follow VITAL GOLD through. He said when placed under pressure in the Straight GOOD GOOD VIEW continued to hang in and although unable to be ridden out over the concluding stages when awkwardly placed outside the heels of STREET CAT, GOOD GOOD VIEW was disappointing in the manner in which it failed to respond to his riding in the Straight. He added that prior to its first run the horse had proved difficult to manage on the training tracks, but it had travelled well in its races. He said that since its last run GOOD GOOD VIEW had again proved difficult to manage in track work and, in his opinion, had not progressed as had been expected. Trainer C H Yip confirmed that as the horse was up in grade today and meeting a strong field, he had asked for the horse to be ridden in a midfield position. He said he did not believe that meeting a field of today’s quality that GOOD GOOD VIEW could travel without cover and finish off its race and therefore he stressed to Jockey Purton that it was imperative that he obtained cover on GOOD GOOD VIEW if at all possible. Z Purton advised the Stewards that he had informed Mr Yip after the race that they experiment with the gear applied to GOOD GOOD VIEW, in particular the bit to be used on the horse in the future in an attempt to have it race more tractably in its races. A veterinary inspection of GOOD GOOD VIEW immediately following the race revealed the horse to have sustained superficial abrasions above the left hock and to have blood at the right nostril and at the mouth. However, an endoscopic examination of GOOD GOOD VIEW found that horse’s trachea to be clean and therefore it was not deemed to have bled. The performance and racing manners of GOOD GOOD VIEW were considered unacceptable. The Stewards ruled that prior to being permitted to race again, GOOD GOOD VIEW will be required to barrier trial satisfactorily around a bend and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
A veterinary inspection of HO IN ONE and VITAL GOLD immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
A veterinary inspection of CALLING WITH LOVE immediately following the race revealed the horse to be lame in its right front leg. Before being allowed to race again, CALLING WITH LOVE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
ADORATION, GOOD GOOD VIEW, FLAGSHIP SHINE and SUDDEN THUNDER were sent for sampling.
<11/3/2013 Additional Veterinary Report>CALLING WITH LOVE, which performed poorly, was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said at that time the horse was lame in its right front leg. CALLING WITH LOVE was again examined by the Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer C Fownes this morning. He said at this time he noted the horse to be also lame in its left front leg. As previously advised, CALLING WITH LOVE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination before being allowed to race again.
