Racing Incident Report

After being boxed, ALL THE GLORY became fractious, reared and got down. The horse was released from the gates, examined by the Veterinary Surgeon and after the necessary consultation he advised in his opinion it was suitable to race. CHINA LEGEND was slowly away. BRUIN SUPREME left the gates satisfactorily, but then shortly afterwards threw its head up. On jumping, DON CARLOS was checked when crowded between MONEY COLT and ALL THE GLORY which jumped awkwardly and shifted in abruptly. Near the 800 Metres, MONEY COLT, which was not travelling well, threw its head up and awkward just inside the hindquarters of DON CARLOS. H K Yim (PLENTY OF LUCK) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)]. The careless riding being that near the 800 Metres he allowed his mount to shift in when not clear of ACE OF PACE. As a consequence of this, ACE OF PACE lost its running and was taken in across the running of DON CARLOS which was checked. H K Yim was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Thursday 27 December 2001 on which day he may resume race riding (5 Hong Kong race days). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the meeting at Sha Tin next Wednesday night. Approaching and rounding the Home Turn, ASIAN EXPRESS hung out. Before the race, Mr D A Hayes, trainer of TOM'S FIRST, advised the Stewards it was not the intention to instruct S Dye to lead on the horse today, he was going to be directed to try and have the horse jump as it did last start, then ride it where it was comfortable. S Dye said TOM'S FIRST was over-relaxed in the gates and he mentioned to D Dunn (MONEY COLT) and B Marcus (DON CARLOS) who were drawn near him he expected TOM'S FIRST to miss the start. He went on to say when ALL THE GLORY was taken out from the gates causing a delay, he sought the assistance of an attendant to try and stand TOM'S FIRST up to the front of the stalls and assist him to get it away. He said he was also slapping the horse down the shoulder in an endeavour to have it jump. He said when the gates opened, despite his efforts and having an attendant, TOM'S FIRST was slowly away as it has been numerous times in the past. He said TOM'S FIRST is a well-mannered horse and shows no vices at all when being loaded or in the gates and in the early stages of its races had been slow to muster speed although he did say this was not the case last time when TOM'S FIRST had its first run in blinkers. He said running towards the 1200 Metres there was an opportunity for him to have improved along the rail inside MONEY COLT, but he elected to shift out and try and make sure he had plenty of racing room. He also said in the middle stages he did consider improving wide but was convinced had he gone to the outside of CHINA LEGEND it would have been shifted out underneath him and he would have been wide off the track approaching and rounding the Home Turn and he therefore elected to try and find runs through the field. He said he was able to do this, but whilst TOM'S FIRST did make ground in the Straight, it did not finish off as strongly as he thought it would. He did however say had TOM'S FIRST jumped and taken up a position near the front as all involved had hoped it would, he was convinced the horse would have won. S Dye was told whilst the Stewards had no reason to doubt his explanations, it is always disappointing to see even money favourites miss the start and get well back as this horse did today. Mr D A Hayes, trainer of TOM'S FIRST, was told before the horse will be allowed to race again, it must perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial. TOM'S FIRST was sent for clinical veterinary examination and testing.
