Racing Incident Report

From an outside gate, TIME TO SURF was steadied on jumping, shifted across behind other runners to take up a position closer to the rail but at the rear. TREMENDOUS WAY came out awkwardly, shifted in and brushed the hindquarters of DON INSIGHT. Turning out of the Straight the first time, DON INSIGHT was steadied and changed course to avoid LUCKY SUPREME (W M Lai) which was shifting in when not clear. W M Lai was severely reprimanded and told he must exercise far more care when shifting ground. Turning into the Back Straight, RIGHT ON got its head on the side, shifted in abruptly away from LUCKY SUPREME and struck the running rail. The occurrence was accidental. The Stewards allowed Mr T K Ng, trainer of LUCKY SUPREME, an opportunity of explaining what on the face of it could be said an improved performance. Mr Ng did not agree the run was an improvement. He said at Happy Valley on 23 January 2002 LUCKY SUPREME from a good draw had run well, but had been rather severely checked with about 200 Metres to go and had this not occurred Mr Ng was confident the horse would have finished significantly closer. He said the horse at the next start was also at Happy Valley from an outside gate, LUCKY SUPREME had to be used up in the early and middle stages to try and go forward and get in, was unable to do so, and after travelling towards the front tired in the concluding stages. Mr Ng said since the last run at Happy Valley he had been under some pressure from the connections to retire the horse, but was able to convince them not to do so. He said since then he had endeavoured to freshen LUCKY SUPREME up and whilst not confident of any success tonight, was hopeful. He said tonight again from a draw towards the outside he asked W M Lai to try and find a position towards the front, but if possible with cover and as the race turned out he said his jockey was able to ride the horse exactly as he had hoped. He also pointed out LUCKY SUPREME over recent times has been coming down in the rating and this would no doubt have helped in tonight's event. The explanations submitted by Mr Ng were accepted. WINNING TOUCH was sent for clinical veterinary examination and testing.
