Racing Incident Report

When the gates opened, OLIVE OR TWIST bounded in the air, then shifted in abruptly across the heels of SEA PEARL. Near the 500 Metres, SMART HORSE was unbalanced when racing close to the heels of ELITE WIN and tight inside SPLENDID BO BO. C Williams (DON CARLOS) explained he had been instructed to try and hold the horse for as long as possible and also he should endeavour to get to the outside and provide the horse with uninterrupted running in the Straight. He said in the early stages because of the shift from runners on his outside, he was unable to get out and had to travel with horses on his outside. He said running towards the Home Turn he was endeavouring to shift out to follow SPLENDID BO BO, but was unable to do so. He said on straightening because of the position he found himself in, he had no option but to look for runs through the field. He said just after the 400 Metres there was an opportunity to go forward, but bearing in mind the instructions he had been given, he waited for as long as he could before putting DON CARLOS under full pressure to go forward. He did conclude by saying DON CARLOS did not find the line as strongly over the 1600 Metres as he thought it would. Whilst the Stewards advised C Williams his explanations were being accepted, he was told at a vital stage his riding had come under some notice. SPLENDID BO BO and BUENO BUENO were sent for sampling.
