Racing Incident Report

BIEN BIEN HEART was slow to begin. Shortly after the start, DESERT STORM was crowded for room by SHABU SHABU which was carried in by SAGACIOUS which in turn was carried in by SING A SONG which on jumping got its head on the side and shifted in. Approaching the 1300 Metres, BOND and SHABU SHABU were hampered when crowded for room by SAGACIOUS which shifted in away from SING A SONG (F Coetzee) after receiving a bump from that horse. The Stewards were satisfied F Coetzee had made the necessary effort to prevent SING A SONG, which was hanging in, shifting ground. At the 900 Metres, MY FAVOURITE, which was proving difficult to settle, became unbalanced when crowded between SINCERE AND FAITH and SHABU SHABU. When questioned, S Dye (MY FAVOURITE) said in the early part of the Straight he was aware there was a run available for him between ALBELA on the outside and SING A SONG on the inside. He said while he was still well off this run, he looked to his outside as it was his intention to shift MY FAVOURITE to the outside and ensure it had an uninterrupted run to the finish. He said he was also of the opinion SING A SONG was showing a tendency to shift out and ALBELA appeared to be shifting in gradually at this time. He added it took some time for him to shift MY FAVOURITE to the outside of ALBELA as he thought runners would improve to his outside. He said when MY FAVOURITE got to the outside of ALBELA at about the 200 Metres, the horse then finished the race off strongly. S Dye conceded the run between SING A SONG and ALBELA was available for him to attempt to improve into for some distance and in hindsight he should have taken this run. He was told while he had reasons for not initially taking the run, the Stewards were concerned the run was available to him for such a length of time that he should have altered his thinking and taken the opportunity available to him and he was advised in future he must make full use of any opportunities which are presented to him, particularly at a critical stage of a race. STRONGHEART and GRAND FIGHTER were sent for sampling.
Omission from Racing Incidents Report (released on 15 Jan. 2003)
For some distance approaching the 200 Metres, SHABU SHABU was held up and unable to improve when racing behind SAGACIOUS and to the inside of SING A SONG.
