Racing Incident Report

CHAMPION LION was withdrawn on 25.3.03 on veterinary grounds (lame right fore) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter CHINESESPORT GLORY (O Doleuze). Before CHAMPION LION can race again, it will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. WOODSON began awkwardly and got its head up. THE FACULTY began awkwardly, shifted in abruptly and was steadied away from the heels of WHATA FEELING. On jumping, GOLDEN STRIDE shifted out and bumped INDY'S GEM. From a wide barrier, CHINESESPORT GLORY was ridden to go forward and raced three wide outside the lead without cover. Despite being ridden hard, CHAMPION RANGER failed to muster speed, got back to be near the rear and in the early stages raced wide without cover. Making the turn near the 1200 Metres, GOLDEN STRIDE hung in. GOLDEN STRIDE also hung in in the Home Straight and near the 100 Metres became unbalanced and shifted out abruptly. At the 1200 Metres, WOODSON got its head up when awkwardly placed close to the heels of THE FACULTY. For some distance approaching the Home Turn, HURRY UP was held up and unable to obtain clear running when behind INDY'S GEM and inside BELLAGIO. In the early part of the Straight, JOYFUL STAR had difficulty obtaining clear running when racing behind I DELIVER and to the inside of INDY'S GEM. The performance of WHATA FEELING, which after leading tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being permitted to race again, WHATA FEELING will be required to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. G Schofield, the rider of INDY'S GEM, 5th placegetter, was fined $20,000 for failing to ride his mount out to the end of the race to the satisfaction of the Stewards. D Whyte (FELICITY), which performed poorly, said he had been riding the horse in track work and on the strength of this work, the horse was strongly fancied by the stable tonight. He said the horse began well and was able to obtain a position about midfield as intended and during the run followed the winner, SUGAR AND SPICE. He said when SUGAR AND SPICE went forward on straightening, he endeavoured to follow that horse through, however, FELICITY did not respond to his riding. He said after the race FELICITY appeared sound and he was unable to offer any explanation for its performance. FELICITY was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. Following the race, FELICITY was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No abnormalities were detected. Before being permitted to race again, FELICITY will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. CHAMPION RANGER and SINCERE AND FAITH were sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, CHAMPION RANGER and SINCERE AND FAITH were examined by the Veterinary Officer. No significant findings were made. SUGAR AND SPICE and HURRY UP were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Report (released on 27 Mar. 2003) :
Following the race, FELICITY, which had performed poorly, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time there were no significant findings. FELICITY was again examined at the stables of Trainer J Moore by the Senior Veterinary Officer this morning. He reported at this time the horse was mildly lame on the right fore leg with an abrasion to the cannon.
As previously advised, FELICITY will be required to pass an official veterinary examination before racing again.
