Racing Incident Report

It was noted COMPASSIONATE had blood in the mouth on arrival at the barriers. The Veterinary Surgeon reported that the blood was a result of a small abrasion to the tongue and the horse was suitable to race. JOYFUL UNION, which was fractious in its stall, reared and then sat down. The horse was removed from the barriers and examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said in his opinion it was not suitable to race. Acting on this advice, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of JOYFUL UNION. Before being allowed to race again, JOYFUL UNION will have to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test. HAPPY ALL AROUND, which was leaning on the side of its gate, began awkwardly. Shortly after the start, GIDDY KIPPER was crowded for room inside FRIENDSHIP. Approaching the winning post on the first occasion, STAR OF NORTHERN and SUPER DRAGON raced tight inside FRIENDSHIP which shifted in when only just clear. Approaching the 1200 Metres, DORDENMA was checked off the heels of COMPASSIONATE, shifted out and bumped SUPER DRAGON. In the early stages, COMPASSIONATE commenced to over-race and was checked away from the heels of JOYFUL WORLD. DORDENMA, which was following COMPASSIONATE, shifted out approaching the 1000 Metres away from the heels of that horse and bumped SUPER DRAGON. Near the 700 Metres, GIDDY KIPPER was steadied off the heels of LUCKY DICE which shifted out to improve around STAR OF NORTHERN. Making the turn at the 600 Metres, DORDENMA commenced to race fiercely, shifted out away from the heels of firstly COMPASSIONATE and then SUPER DRAGON and as a result became unbalanced. COMPASSIONATE lay out under pressure in the Straight and over the concluding stages shifted out, inconveniencing STAR OF NORTHERN. Near the 250 Metres, GIDDY KIPPER was steadied when disappointed for running between SUPER DRAGON and TOUCH DOWN, both of which shifted ground. When questioned regarding his riding of THAT'S IT, H K Yim said he had been instructed from the outside barrier to have the horse race in about midfield but with cover and as close to the rail as possible. He said it was anticipated there would be good pace in the race and because of this he might be able to obtain a position close to midfield. He said at the start he immediately steadied THAT'S IT to try and obtain a position near midfield, however, he was unable to do so and for this reason the horse was obliged to race at the rear and further back than had been intended. He added he attempted to improve his position passing the 500 Metres but was unable to do so when racing behind TOUCH DOWN and inside GIDDY KIPPER. He said at the entrance to the Straight he shifted his mount out in an endeavour to take a run to the outside of TOUCH DOWN, however, he was obliged to shift to the inside of TOUCH DOWN when disappointed for this run. He said THAT'S IT was inclined to hang in in the Straight and for this reason he took some time to get the horse balanced before riding it out. He said due to THAT'S IT laying in he was obliged to change his whip from his left hand into his right hand at about the 200 Metres and when balanced he used the whip on THAT'S IT passing the 100 Metres and the horse closed the race off well. Mr T W Leung, trainer of THAT'S IT, confirmed the instructions given to H K Yim and stated these instructions were consistent with those given to E Saint-Martin at its most recent start, however, the horse on that occasion raced more forward than was anticipated. He added due to the good tempo of tonight's race in the early stages, THAT'S IT was obliged to race further back than he had hoped. H K Yim was advised his riding of THAT'S IT in the Straight had come under notice and he was at all times to ride his mounts in such a manner as to leave no room for query. Mr Leung was reminded of his responsibilities to advise the Stewards if there is to be a change in the intended riding tactics from one start to the next. SUPER DRAGON and THAT'S IT were sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, SUPER DRAGON was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucopus in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, SUPER DRAGON will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A veterinary inspection of THAT'S IT after the race did not show any significant findings. FRIENDSHIP and DORDENMA were sent for sampling. The Veterinary Officer reported that COMPASSIONATE had sustained abrasions to the right hind tendon area and had lost the left hind plate.
