Racing Incident Report

On jumping, BRAVE KNIGHT knuckled. HAPPY MASTER was slow to begin, then shortly afterwards was checked when crowded for room between SUPERSONIC which shifted in after making contact with SAND DANCE and SUPER PRINCE which shifted out after making contact with SWIFT GERMANIA which was carried wider by BRAVE KNIGHT. After the 800 Metres, GAUCHO was steadied when tightened for room between LUCKY UNICORN and HELENE ELEGANCE which was carried in slightly by SAND DANCE (D Whyte). D Whyte was told to exercise greater care. For some distance after the 600 Metres, BRAVE KNIGHT was steadied when awkwardly placed close to the heels of SWIFT GERMANIA. Making the Home Turn, SUPERSONIC hung out. In the early part of the Straight, SUPER PRINCE hung out. At the 200 Metres, HAPPY MASTER, which was commencing to close the race off strongly, was steadied and shifted out to avoid the heels of GRAND COMMANDS which was giving ground. Throughout the race, SAND DANCE travelled wide and without cover. Apprentice K L Chui (GAUCHO) said on jumping the horse jumped into the bit and as a consequence got its head up, causing him to become unbalanced. This resulted in GAUCHO losing ground. Having in mind Apprentice Chui's inexperience, he was told to ensure he allows his mounts sufficient rein to jump cleanly. Y T Cheng (GRAND COMMANDS), which had drawn barrier 2, explained in the early stages he rode his mount along to go forward with the intention of gradually shifting to the fence if able to. He said he anticipated SUCCESSOR which had drawn to his inside would be one of the leaders in the race. He said he was aware SUCCESSOR today had been slow to begin, he rode along in the early stages on GRAND COMMANDS to gather momentum, looked to his inside on two occasions after the 1100 Metres and commenced to gradually shift towards the rail when he was clear of SUCCESSOR. He said as he continued to shift towards the rail, O Doleuze, the rider of SUCCESSOR, which was being hard ridden to make up ground, called loudly to him near the 1000 Metres. He said because of this he had a sustained look to his inside and when he realised at that time he was no longer clear of SUCCESSOR, he continued to race one horse off the fence. O Doleuze (SUCCESSOR) explained prior to the race it was thought there were a number of leaders in the race and as SUCCESSOR had previously shown it takes a short distance after the start to muster speed, he should if runners from the outside crossed try to obtain a position behind the leaders. He said SUCCESSOR was fractious in the barriers, was slow to begin and began awkwardly, causing him to momentarily lose the use of his right stirrup. He said he then rode along and was able to improve his position on the inside of GRAND COMMANDS. He said approaching the turn at the 700 Metres LUCKY UNICORN commenced to shift in and he allowed that horse to cross to the fence and obtained a position behind it. He said when asked for an effort on straightening, SUCCESSOR did not respond to his riding and in his opinion in the Straight raced "flat". Mr A Lee, trainer of SUCCESSOR, confirmed the riding instructions issued to O Doleuze, however, he was unable to offer any explanation for the poor performance. He said he may now consider experimenting with a gear change and possibly increasing the distance of the horse's next race start. SUCCESSOR was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of SUCCESSOR after the race did not show any significant findings. LUCKY UNICORN and HELENE ELEGANCE were sent for sampling.
