Racing Incident Report
LEGIONNAIRE and SEASONS KNACK were slow to begin. After the 1700 Metres, LANCETTIER was steadied when awkwardly placed inside AQUA-TREASURE which itself was racing tight inside FREEBIRD. After entering the Back Straight, SOCRATES was shifted to the outside to improve its position. On straightening, MY LANSON was shifted out away from the heels of WADADELIGHT. Also on straightening, WADADELIGHT lost ground when following WINNING SUNSHINE which at this point gave ground. Approaching the 200 Metres, WADADELIGHT, which was beginning to close the race off strongly, was steadied when crowded for room between WINNING SUNSHINE and LEGIONNAIRE which at this time was giving ground quickly. Throughout the race, WINNING SUNSHINE travelled wide and without cover. O Doleuze (WADADELIGHT) said from barrier 9 the intention had been to ride the horse with cover. He said it was anticipated a number of runners drawn to his inside would go forward, he therefore endeavoured to shift across behind LEGIONNAIRE and follow that horse. He said if WADADELIGHT does not obtain cover, it usually does not show its best. When questioned regarding the poor performance of LEGIONNAIRE, F Coetzee was unable to offer any explanation. He said LEGIONNAIRE began only fairly, FREEBIRD quickly raced forward of him and crossed to the lead. He said he rode LEGIONNAIRE along in the hope of being able to race outside FREEBIRD, however, LEGIONNAIRE did not respond to his riding as he thought it would and when FREEBIRD raced one horse away from the rail he elected to follow that runner. He said LEGIONNAIRE did not appear to travel comfortably in a trailing position and because of this he shifted to a three wide position in the Back Straight. He said on straightening LEGIONNAIRE gave ground quickly. Mr A S Cruz, trainer of LEGIONNAIRE, said the horse's work leading into the race had been good and he was unable to offer any explanation for the poor performance of the horse. The performance of LEGIONNAIRE was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, LEGIONNAIRE will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. LEGIONNAIRE was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. A veterinary inspection of LEGIONNAIRE after the race did not show any significant findings. TOP SCORER and AQUA-TREASURE were sent for sampling.
