Racing Incident Report

SMARTY was slow to begin. From a wide barrier, BRAVERY LUCK was taken across behind runners, then passing the winning post on the first occasion became unbalanced when racing between DANEPRINT and DENDRANTHEMA LOVE. After this, BRAVERY LUCK proved difficult to settle and near the 1200 Metres got its head up and shifted out, causing inconvenience to DENDRANTHEMA LOVE which was travelling wide and without cover. DENDRANTHEMA LOVE continued travelling wide and without cover and was allowed to stride forward after the 800 Metres. The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in as they were of the view that DENDRANTHEMA LOVE (S Dye) had caused sufficient interference to LA MERVEILLE in the early part of the Straight to cast doubt on whether DENDRANTHEMA LOVE should be declared the 4th placegetter of the race. After viewing the available videos, the Stewards formed the opinion that whilst LA MERVEILLE was hampered when carried in by DENDRANTHEMA LOVE in the early part of the Straight, LA MERVEILLE would not have finished in front of DENDRANTHEMA LOVE had this interference not taken place. In arriving at this decision, the Stewards noted after the incident LA MERVEILLE headed DENDRANTHEMA LOVE. Weighed-in was declared on the numbers as semaphored by the Judge. Subsequently S Dye was reprimanded and told to exercise greater care. Over the final 200 Metres, LA MERVEILLE hung in. Just prior to the winning post, A BETTER DRAGON became unbalanced and was checked when crowded for room between DANEPRINT and LA MERVEILLE (F Coetzee) which shifted in while hanging. F Coetzee was reprimanded and told in similar circumstances he would be expected to make a greater effort to protect his fellow riders. M Nunes (A BETTER DRAGON) said prior to the race he had been instructed to ride the horse in a forward position as the winners of the earlier races tonight had come from horses in forward positions. Mr K L Man, trainer of A BETTER DRAGON, confirmed the riding instructions issued and said A BETTER DRAGON often does not begin well and as a consequence travels well back in its races. He said he had hoped the horse would be able to obtain a position with cover tonight, however, it travelled outside the leader and was difficult to settle. Mr Man was reminded of his responsibility to inform the Stewards of any intended change in riding instructions. When questioned regarding the improved performance of CHAMP DRAGON, Mr C Fownes, trainer of the horse, said he was not able to explain the horse's most recent poor performance. He did say prior to that race CHAMP DRAGON had been in his opinion consistent. He said when there were no significant findings reported by the Veterinary Officer of CHAMP DRAGON following the last start, he formed the opinion the horse might be better suited racing at Happy Valley on a more forgiving surface. He said in addition he had the horse's front fetlocks treated. It was noted that the first two sections run by CHAMP DRAGON tonight were appreciably slower than when the horse had previously raced over the course and distance. CHAMP DRAGON and WATCHMAN were sent for sampling. After the race, it was noted LA MERVEILLE had lost both front plates.
