Racing Incident Report

After entering the track, THUNDER VALLEY became fractious and dislodged S K Sit, its rider. When S K Sit attempted to remount THUNDER VALLEY, the horse reared over and fell. After arriving at the Start, THUNDER VALLEY was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said in his opinion the horse was not suitable to race. Acting on this advice, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of THUNDER VALLEY. Mr D J Hall, trainer of THUNDER VALLEY, was advised as the horse had performed similarly at its most recent start, it will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination and also perform satisfactorily in a pre-race parade before being allowed to race again. JUGGERNAUT began awkwardly and lost ground. On jumping, JOY TRUMPS got its head up. Making the first turn, SUPREME GOLD was steadied away from the heels of LUCKY TYCOON after being carried in by ALICE TOO which at this time got its head on the side and shifted in abruptly. KIWI DASH, which was following, was steadied in consequence. In the early stages, ELEPHANT DANCE travelled wide and without cover. Making the turn at the 1200 Metres, EVER KING got its head up and hung out. At the 250 Metres, ALICE TOO, which was giving ground, was steadied away from the heels of MAGI JOY. In the Straight, JUGGERNAUT and CHAMPION PIONEER hung out. Throughout the race, MAGI JOY travelled wide and without cover. W M Lai (ELEPHANT DANCE) explained after the 600 Metres he commenced to improve his position around the field. He said as he did this JUGGERNAUT which had been racing forward of him to his inside commenced to shift out whilst being ridden along. He said he therefore continued to race outside JUGGERNAUT as he felt if he had ridden his mount along at that stage of the race, it would be carried unnecessarily wide by JUGGERNAUT. He said shortly after straightening he commenced to ride ELEPHANT DANCE along. He said ELEPHANT DANCE responded fairly, however, when struck with the whip did not quicken, therefore over about the last 100 Metres he rode his mount out hands and heels to the finish. Whilst the Stewards were satisfied W M Lai’s riding of ELEPHANT DANCE did not affect the horse’s placing, he nonetheless was reminded of his responsibility to ensure horses ridden by him were fully tested. E Saint-Martin (LUCKY TYCOON) said he had been instructed if possible to ride the horse in the box seat. He said in accordance with those instructions he went forward in the early stages, however, when no other runner improved around his outside he travelled in the lead. He said in the middle stages he steadied the tempo while continuing to race in the lead. He did say in his opinion LUCKY TYCOON will be better suited if able to be ridden with cover. JOYFUL YEARS and PALAIS D’OR were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of JOYFUL YEARS after the race did not show any significant findings. After the race, PALAIS D’OR was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse lame in its left front leg. Before being allowed to race again, PALAIS D’OR will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. SUPREME GOLD and JOY TRUMPS were sent for sampling.
