Racing Incident Report

After being boxed, GRAND STAR became fractious and broke through whilst riderless. The horse worked almost a circuit of the course and on veterinary advice was withdrawn by order of the Stewards. Before being allowed to race again, GRAND STAR will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial. SONGS OF PRAISE and WINNING ASSOCIATES were slowly away. ELLEN'S WON missed the start, then shortly afterwards was crowded for room between GRAND FIGHTER and JUST IN TIME. On jumping, NEW DYNASTY shifted out and bumped ACCURACY. In the early stages, NEW DYNASTY, which was racing wide without cover, proved difficult to settle and threw its head about, then approaching and rounding the Home Turn hung out. In the Straight, RISING INDEX hung in. About the 200 Metres, SONGS OF PRAISE, which was giving ground, became unbalanced when racing a little tight inside WINNING ASSOCIATES as it improved and went forward. Also about the 200 Metres, ELLEN'S WON was steadied when momentarily tight inside SHERDIL. Shortly after this, SHERDIL was awkwardly placed behind RISING INDEX, not able to improve, then over about the last 100 Metres was not ridden out as it normally would be. GRAND FIGHTER and SHERDIL were sent for clinical veterinary examination and routine testing. The Stewards afforded Mr D Oughton, trainer of WINNING ASSOCIATES, an opportunity of explaining the improved performance of the horse. Mr Oughton said as a griffin, WINNING ASSOCIATES had been very disappointing although he did point out in the horse's last run on 9 June 2001 it had almost fallen near the 400 Metres and was eased down. He said in its preparation this year the horse had trialed disappointedly when ridden by a senior jockey and for today's race he had sought the services of a number of senior riders without success and finally engaged a claiming apprentice. Mr Oughton said he changed so many things with the horse that he was not sure what might have worked. He pointed out he put blinkers on, changed the horse's work pattern, changed its bedding, changed its feed and the win today was a complete surprise to him and to those associated with the stable. The explanations submitted by Mr Oughton were accepted.
