Racing Incident Report

Whilst parading, BOXING DAY became unbalanced and slipped over. Acting on veterinary advice, BOXING DAY was withdrawn by order of the Stewards. When the gates opened, SURELY bounded in the air. Rounding the Home Turn, TRIUMPHANT STAR had a tendency to lay out. When questioned, D Whyte (UNIVERSAL PEGASUS) said on the first turn he had to steady to avoid the heels of GRACE AND GLORY which shifted in when barely clear. He said when being eased UNIVERSAL PEGASUS, which does have a tendency to race with its head up, became unbalanced, commenced to hang out, hung out across the heels of NO COMPETITOR and as a consequence in the middle stages travelled very wide. He went on to say in the early part of the Straight he had some difficulty shifting UNIVERSAL PEGASUS from behind NO COMPETITOR into clear running, to do so had to change his grip on the horse and turn it out more abruptly than he normally would. He did acknowledge that UNIVERSAL PEGASUS found the line strongly and but for the incident in the middle stages he was of the view the horse would have been successful. R Fradd (AMITY) said he had been instructed by the Trainer from an outside gate to use the horse's natural speed and go forward, but if possible in the middle stages try and give the horse a rest if he was getting an easy lead. He said AMITY jumped well, quickly got to the front, but in the middle stages was not given any peace by TRIUMPHANT STAR, shortly after that started to give ground and generally in his opinion was very disappointing. AMITY was sent for clinical veterinary examination and routine testing.
