Racing Incident Report

K S Yu was fined $2,000 for accepting the rides on both FLYING MAGIC and STORM BOY. It was established that he had a firm commitment for STORM BOY. MANOR STAR jumped awkwardly. H K Yim (FORTUNE GLORY) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding. The careless riding being that near the winning post the first time he allowed his mount to shift in when not clear of AQUA PRINCE. As a consequence of this, AQUA PRINCE which at the time was pulling lost running to which it was rightfully entitled and was checked rather severely to avoid the heels of FORTUNE GLORY. After taking into account all the circumstances and submissions put by H K Yim, the Stewards decided that in the special circumstances of this case the appropriate penalty was for his licence to ride in races be suspended for a period to expire on Monday, 18 June 2001 on which day he may resume race riding. This is in effect a one day suspension of his licence to ride. In addition a fine of $75,000 was imposed. The commencement of the suspension is to take immediate effect. Due mainly to the pace in the early stages, EYE'S MAGIC had a tendency to race with its head up. About the 1600 Metres, MANOR STAR, which was pulling, shifted out abruptly from behind DARLEY. As a consequence of this, AQUA PRINCE, which was following, was checked and obliged to race wider. In the opinion of the Stewards, the occurrence was accidental. About the 300 Metres, EYE'S MAGIC was checked and changed course when disappointed for running between MANOR STAR and TIME HONOUR which was taken in by MONZA KING. For some distance near the 200 Metres, STAR DRAGON, which was improving from a rearward position, was held up behind FORTUNE GLORY. In an endeavour to obtain running, STAR DRAGON was initially shifted in, when disappointed was shifted out. The Stewards overruled an objection lodged by J Egan, the rider of TIME HONOUR, which finished 3rd, against MONZA KING (D Whyte) being declared the winner. J Egan alleged interference to his mount on two occasions in the Straight, firstly at about the 300 Metres and then later at about the 200 Metres. The Stewards considered that whilst MONZA KING shifted some ground near the 300 Metres the inconvenience caused at this stage to TIME HONOUR was of little significance and D Whyte did stop riding and straighten. The incident at about the 200 Metres did result in TIME HONOUR being checked, but bearing in mind the distance between the two horses at the finish and the manner in which they had finished the race off, the extent of the interference in the opinion of the Stewards did not justify an alteration to the Judge's placings. Accordingly the placings as semaphored were confirmed. D Whyte was found guilty of a charge of careless riding. The careless riding being that about the 200 Metres he allowed his mount to shift inwards whilst riding it along when not clear of TIME HONOUR. As a result of this TIME HONOUR lost running to which it was rightfully entitled and was checked. After taking into account all the circumstances and submissions put by D Whyte, the Stewards were of the view the appropriate penalty in this case was that D Whyte be suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Monday, 18 June 2001 on which day he may resume race riding (3 Hong Kong race days). In addition a fine of $30,000 was imposed. The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the meeting at Happy Valley on Wednesday, 6 June 2001.
