Racing Incident Report

HERO'S WAY was withdrawn on 12.4.02 on veterinary grounds (lame off fore). Before being allowed to race again, HERO'S WAY will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. SEREVI left the gates very awkwardly with its head up, shifted out and was awkward on the hindquarters of MR BASKETBALL, then in the early stages pulled and turning out of the Straight the first time again threw its head about when awkward just inside the hindquarters of MENDOZA. BORN DRAGON was slowly away. From a difficult gate, MENDOZA was obliged to race wide throughout, most of the trip without any cover and over the concluding stages gave ground. On straightening, ISLAND WEST TREBLE was steadied and shifted in to improve into running which was left vacant when ALF shifted out. F Coetzee (FORTUNE PRIZES) said even though the horse had drawn a difficult gate, the intention was to go forward. He said FORTUNE PRIZES is a difficult horse in the boxes and today was restless as it usually is. He said as a consequence FORTUNE PRIZES missed the start slightly and because of this running to the first turn he was awkwardly placed behind MENDOZA, could not go to the lead as intended, raced well back and was wide. The explanations submitted were accepted. D Whyte (ALF) said the horse has a history of bleeding and he was asked today to try and find cover. He said however the manner in which the race was run, this was not possible and when other runners were racing outside him, he found himself in the lead and the horse proved somewhat difficult to settle. He said at about the 600 Metres when RACE TO HONOUR and MR BASKETBALL were pushed hard to lead, he allowed them to go forward and cross him in the hope that ALF would be able to have a breather for at least a short time. He said when those runners did cross him, ALF did tend to relax a little more, but then approaching the 400 Metres to ensure he had clear running in the Straight, he shifted out. The explanations submitted by D Whyte were accepted. BILLION DELIGHT and ALF were sent for clinical veterinary examination and testing.
