Racing Incident Report

As the gates opened, DEREK'S CHOICE reared and lost considerable ground. Before DEREK'S CHOICE will be permitted to race again, it will be required to pass a stalls test. FLAMENCO STAR was slow to begin. Approaching the first turn, EXULTATION, which was racing with its head on the side and hanging in away from TAMAR, was steadied. Some inconvenience was caused to RARE which was racing to the inside of EXULTATION. At about the 1100 Metres, CORAJOSO was steadied when tight inside HAPPY YEARS. At the 1000 Metres, FLAMENCO STAR brushed the running rail. At the 600 Metres, TAMAR was severely checked when crowded for room between HAPPY YEARS which shifted out slightly and HONOUR SUPREME which shifted in slightly. When TAMAR checked, inconvenience was caused to EXULTATION and RARE, both of which were checked, and also CORAJOSO was crowded and ROYAL ARMY was hampered and obliged to race wider. Although the incident was one of some significance, the Stewards were unable to attribute responsibility to any one rider or riders, therefore no action was taken. Shortly after straightening, HAPPY YEARS was disappointed for running on the outside of SNIPPETYIYEA and inside SENSIBLE WAY which was hanging in. W M Lai (HAPPY YEARS) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that at about the 200 Metres he allowed his mount to shift in when not clear of CORAJOSO and TRUST ME, causing those horses to lose their rightful running and check. W M Lai was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Thursday 12 December 2002 on which day he may resume race riding (3 Hong Kong race days). W M Lai made a special request that his suspension takes immediate effect, however, this request was not acceded to. The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Sha Tin meeting next Saturday 30 November 2002. Just prior to the winning post, SENSIBLE WAY was steadied when close to the heels of DEREK'S CHOICE which shifted in. When questioned, G Schofield (ROYAL ARMY) said he had been instructed by the trainer to have the horse racing where it felt comfortable. He added he anticipated this would be in about 4th or 5th position. He said ROYAL ARMY was a little slow to begin from the outside barrier and he immediately decided it would not be in the best interests of the horse to ride along in an endeavour to take up a forward position, therefore he allowed his mount to settle behind midfield. He said along the Back Straight he commenced to improve his position three wide, however, at the 600 Metres he was obliged to shift his mount wider to avoid interference which was occurring in front of him. The explanations tendered by G Schofield were accepted. SENSIBLE WAY, HONOUR SUPREME and DEREK'S CHOICE were sent for sampling. After the race, it was reported that SENSIBLE WAY had sustained a minor laceration to the right nostril.
