Racing Incident Report

LEGEND OF VELOCITY left the gates awkwardly and threw its head about. On jumping, SOLO got its head on the side, shifted in abruptly and bumped LANDLORD. From a difficult gate, SOLO was obliged to race wide throughout and was not able to find any cover. About the 1000 Metres, HONG KONG STAR became unbalanced when being steadied to avoid the heels of LANDLORD (D Dunn) which shifted in when not clear. D Dunn was severely reprimanded and told he must exercise far more care when shifting ground. Shortly after the incident near the 1000 Metres, HONG KONG STAR again became momentarily unbalanced when racing inside SOLO. About the 800 Metres, LEGEND OF VELOCITY became unbalanced when close to the heels of SKYSTONE (H K Yim) which shifted in when not clear. H K Yim was told he must exercise far more care. Rounding the Home Turn, HONG KONG STAR hung out. For a short distance near the 400 Metres, SKYSTONE was awkwardly placed close to the heels of DON INSIGHT and after the 200 Metres SKYSTONE was steadied and shifted out abruptly to avoid LANDLORD which was stopping. Approaching the 200 Metres, PERFECT VISION became unbalanced and changed course to avoid SIR TIMAH which was shifting out to find running. The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in. They were of the prima facie view that an incident had occurred about the 200 Metres which cast sufficient doubt on whether SIR TIMAH (W C Marwing) should be declared the winner of the race. They decided there was justification to have the matter resolved formally and openly at a protest/objection hearing (Rule 123). E Legrix, the rider of STARLIGHT SUPREME, second placegetter, also objected against SIR TIMAH being declared the winner alleging interference to his mount over about the last 200 Metres. Following the conduct of a formal hearing, the Stewards on all the available evidence were of the opinion that about the 200 Metres SIR TIMAH shifted out from behind GOOD TIME FOR ALL and improved into a run between that horse and STARLIGHT SUPREME when there was barely sufficient room to do so, when improving into the run SIR TIMAH bumped STARLIGHT SUPREME on two occasions and as a consequence that horse became momentarily unbalanced. The Stewards did not consider, bearing in mind the half a length margin between the two horses at the finish, that STARLIGHT SUPREME would have finished in front of SIR TIMAH had the bumping which did take place not occurred. Accordingly the protest/objection was overruled and the Judge's placings as semaphored were confirmed. At a later inquiry, W C Marwing was reprimanded and told he must ensure he has sufficient racing room before improving his position. D Dunn (LANDLORD) said Mr A T Millard, trainer of the horse, was absent today and accordingly he was given instructions by the assistant trainer. D Dunn said although the horse had drawn wide today, he was instructed to leave the gates quickly, go forward and take up a position in front. He said he had to make a lot of use of LANDLORD to lead and over the concluding stages the horse weakened badly and on pulling up stopped quickly, was motionless for a short time and he considered it might have bled. Before being allowed to race again, LANDLORD will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. GOOD TIME FOR ALL was sent for clinical veterinary examination and testing.
