Racing Incident Report

On the way to the saddling stalls, MON AMI got loose and returned to the sand yard. After the horse was caught, it was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who was unable to detect any abnormalities and said in his opinion the horse was suitable to race. On the way to the Start, W M Lai was dislodged from MON AMI. After being caught, MON AMI was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon and on his advice was withdrawn by order of the Stewards. In view of the behaviour of MON AMI, the horse will not be allowed to race again until it can satisfy the Stewards that it can participate in the pre-race parade. After being boxed, ROMANTIC FORTUNE became fractious, then jumped awkwardly and bumped the inside of its starting gate. Before ROMANTIC FORTUNE can race again, it must perform satisfactorily in a stalls test. MY DELIGHT left the gates awkwardly, then about the 1200 Metres became unbalanced when close to the heels of POWERFUL and again after the 800 Metres got its head on the side, hung out abruptly across the heels of FLASH HARRY. About the 800 Metres, KING OF FISH, which was pulling hard, was steadied to avoid the heels of PRETTY PRETTY which shifted in when only just clear. In the middle stages, FLASH HARRY hung in away from the hindquarters of TUMBLER, then in the Straight raced ungenerously with its head on the side and hung in. Near the 500 Metres, GREAT STAR was steadied when disappointed for running between BONANZA and SUPER COMBINATION. Approaching the 200 Metres, OPERA MAGIC shifted to the inside of SUPER COMBINATION to find running. G Schofield (EUPHORIC KID) explained he had been instructed by the trainer to ensure he gave the horse an uninterrupted run in the Straight. He said on straightening he had shifted out to be in a position behind MY DELIGHT, however, when he pulled the whip in his left hand, EUPHORIC KID was inclined to shift in away from it and as he was aware there was clear running towards the inside, he allowed the horse to shift towards that rather than come back out and potentially unbalance EUPHORIC KID. He did say although he had uninterrupted running to the line, EUPHORIC KID was inclined to shift ground and raced greenly. The explanations submitted were accepted. D Whyte (OPERA MAGIC) explained he had been asked to try and ensure the horse was properly balanced in the early stages. He said running to the first turn he was awkward just inside the hindquarters of BONANZA, to have maintained his position would have meant him having to ride along hard, in the circumstances he elected not to do this, he steadied and took up a position behind BONANZA and thereafter enjoyed a good run. He said in the Straight OPERA MAGIC, although closing off quite well, was shifting ground and proving somewhat difficult for him to ride out. He said about 100 Metres out OPERA MAGIC was shifting out, he momentarily stopped riding, changed his whip hand, then in the run to the winning post he was aware he was running up close to the back of KING OF FISH and in the circumstances he rode the horse out as best he could to the line. The explanations submitted were accepted. FLASH HARRY was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, FLASH HARRY was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse was moving in an abnormally stiff action and he intends to further investigate the matter tomorrow. KING OF FISH and DYNAMIC FUN were sent for sampling. After the race, ROMANTIC FORTUNE was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination revealed a significant amount of blood in the horse's windpipe and in his opinion the horse was showing signs of a dynamic pharyngeal collapse (the wall at the back of the horse's throat collapsed as it attempted to breathe in).
