Racing Incident Report
After arriving at the Start, it was noted blood was present in the left nostril of RAIDER. The Veterinary Surgeon examined RAIDER and noted this blood originated from a cut. After the necessary consultations, it was decided RAIDER was suitable to race. BULLISH LUCK stood flat-footed at the start and lost ground. MADE TO FIGURE was slow to begin. From the outside barrier, RAIDER was immediately steadied and shifted across behind runners to find a position closer to the rail and with cover. Prior to straightening, ELEGANT FASHION became unbalanced when awkwardly placed between BULLISH LUCK and RAIDER. C Soumillon (CLASSIC MASTER) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that after the 300 Metres he permitted his mount to shift out when not clear of SOLID CONTACT, resulting in that horse losing its rightful running and being checked. C Soumillon was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Sunday 9 February 2003 on which day he may resume race riding (3 Hong Kong race days). The commencement of this suspension was deferred until after the Happy Valley meeting next Wednesday 22 January 2003. Near the 200 Metres, SHAXI FORTUNE was momentarily steadied to avoid the heels of RAIDER which shifted in when only just clear. For some distance after the 200 Metres, JAZZ BEAT had difficulty obtaining a clear run behind MASTER FAY and inside CENTURY STAR. While the Stewards considered the riding of G Schofield (ASIA RISING) in the run to the line did not affect the horse's finishing position and accordingly a breach of Rule 100(2) did not occur, they did however advise G Schofield he must ride all mounts out at least hands and heels to the end of the race whenever possible. W C Marwing (HO CHOI) said he had ridden the horse in a recent barrier trial on the turf at Sha Tin and in that trial the horse travelled well, however, when asked for an effort dropped the bit and because of this he hit the horse twice with the whip in an attempt to get it again pick up the bit. He said today the horse travelled satisfactorily between ASIA RISING on its inside and SHAXI FORTUNE on its outside until after the 700 Metres, HO CHOI then dropped the bit and as a result he rode the horse along in an endeavour to hold its position. He said despite his riding, HO CHOI did not pick up the bit as he would have wished and on straightening SHAXI FORTUNE was able to improve around his outside and cross his running. He said he continued to ride HO CHOI along and at the same time shift the horse out into the clear and once obtaining clear running HO CHOI then in his opinion finished the race off fairly. The explanations submitted by W C Marwing were accepted. S Dye (CENTURY STAR) said the horse has a history of being difficult to settle in its races and as such he is always instructed to ride his horse where it is comfortable, but primarily to do his utmost to ensure the horse is settled in the run. He said CENTURY STAR began well today, he allowed CLASSIC MASTER, which had been drawn to his outside, to cross him and go forward and at all times was conscious of trying to settle CENTURY STAR. He said at about the 1200 Metres when ASIA RISING went forward to his outside and JAZZ BEAT which was racing to his inside shifted out, he could have allowed CENTURY STAR to stride forward and maintain its position behind CLASSIC MASTER, however, he felt to have done so would have allowed CENTURY HORSE to begin to over-race and therefore he allowed ASIA RISING to shift in in front of him. He said when he did this, CENTURY STAR got its head up and commenced to over-race, however, he was satisfied with his position. He said he maintained this position behind ASIA RISING and anticipated running towards the Home Turn that horse would shift to be three wide and commence to improve with his intention being to follow it through, however, when ASIA RISING did not improve, he was unable to improve his position on CENTURY STAR as he would have wished and at the same time was not able to shift out as he had runners to his outside. He said early in the Straight he was still following ASIA RISING and anticipated that horse would shift to the outside of SOLID CONTACT to improve its position, however, when this did not happen, he shifted back towards the inside on CENTURY STAR and was unable to obtain a clear run until after the 200 Metres when CENTURY STAR then closed the race off strongly. The explanations submitted by S Dye were accepted. CENTURY STAR, ELEGANT FASHION and RAIDER were sent for sampling.
