Racing Incident Report

ANABATIK was withdrawn on 31.12.02 on veterinary grounds (coughing). CLIFFHANGER began awkwardly. At the start, OUR CLASS jumped with its head in the air, shifted in abruptly and bumped SPEED LORD. Also at the start, GRAND DELIGHT and THUNDER bumped. At the 1000 Metres, CAPE OF GOOD HOPE was steadied to avoid the heels of PRIME WITNESS which was carried in slightly by SPEED LORD. Some inconvenience was also caused to GONLARGO. O Doleuze (SMART WINNER) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that at about the 800 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of CAPE OF GOOD HOPE, resulting in that horse losing its rightful running and being checked. O Doleuze was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Thursday 16 January 2003 on which day he may resume race riding (3 Hong Kong race days). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Sha Tin meeting next Saturday 4 January 2003. Shortly after straightening, HAPPY MOMENTUM was steadied and shifted to the inside of PRIME WITNESS to obtain clear running. After the 200 Metres, CLIFFHANGER, which was giving ground, was steadied when crowded between MONARDS and WINNING COUNTER, both of which shifted ground. Over the final 200 Metres, OUR CLASS was awkwardly placed on the heels of VICTORY WARRIOR which was giving ground. F Coetzee (THUNDER) explained the intention today, because of the increase in distance, was to ride the horse with cover somewhere around midfield. He said after arriving at the Start THUNDER was on the toe. He said THUNDER as usual was a little slow to begin from a wide gate, he immediately tried to hold his position beside GRAND DELIGHT in an effort to obtain cover, however, shortly after the start THUNDER bumped GRAND DELIGHT and then commenced to over-race. He said when this happened, he was left with, in his opinion, no alternative other than to allow THUNDER to stride forward to the lead. He added when THUNDER joined VICTORY WARRIOR in the lead, it immediately relaxed, however, when placed under pressure in the Straight did not respond to his riding. He said in his opinion the poor performance of THUNDER today could be attributed to the manner in which it raced in the early stages. He added the intention in future will be, circumstances permitting, to ride THUNDER with cover. THUNDER was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, THUNDER was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No abnormalities were detected. GRAND DELIGHT and SMART WINNER were sent for sampling. Following the race, the Veterinary Officer reported OUR CLASS was bleeding from a cut to the tongue.
Additional Veterinary Report (released on 2 Jan. 2003) :
Following its race yesterday, THUNDER was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer who said at that time there were no significant findings. This morning THUNDER was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer A S Cruz. The horse was found to be lame in the right fore leg. Before being permitted to race again, THUNDER will be required to pass an official veterinary examination.
