Racing Incident Report

DANAMITE was withdrawn on 4.4.03 on veterinary grounds (lame right hind infection) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter SURVEYOR (Y T Cheng). Before DANAMITE can race again, it will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. On jumping, CELLINI and HELENE VITALITY bumped. GIFT was slow to begin. RAIDER began awkwardly and bumped the inside gate of its barrier. At the 800 Metres, GOGGLES got its head up when awkwardly placed close to the heels of IDOL and tight inside VISORHILL. C Williams (LUCKSWELL) said he had been instructed to ride the horse somewhere around midfield with cover if possible as in recent starts when being ridden forward, LUCKSWELL had not been finishing its races off. He said LUCKSWELL today began well and he immediately attempted to find a position in midfield with cover, however, when racing outside MAGIC HANDS in the early stages, it became apparent to him that the horse would not be able to shift in and therefore to avoid being caught wide and without cover, he elected to steady LUCKSWELL further and take it back to a position behind EQUATOR KID but with the rear. He said he had been further instructed not to make ground around the field on the turn but rather save his mount for one run in the Straight, accordingly he remained behind EQUATOR KID into the Home Straight and when the field quickened, LUCKSWELL was initially left flat-footed before closing the race off nicely. The explanations submitted by C Williams were accepted. Y T Cheng (SURVEYOR) said he had been instructed by the trainer with the horse's light weight today and a wide gate, he should lead if possible. He said SURVEYOR began only fairly, he then had to ride the horse along in an endeavour to carry out his instructions. He said at the 1400 Metres he reached the lead, but was three wide with IDOL and RED SUN to his inside, therefore passing the 1200 Metres he again rode SURVEYOR along to clear those horses and shift across to the fence in the lead to avoid racing wide. Y T Cheng acknowledged that he had made too much use of SURVEYOR in the early stages, however, he said he did so only in an attempt to follow the riding instructions he had been issued. SURVEYOR was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, SURVEYOR was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No abnormalities were detected. VISORHILL, RIVER DANCER and RAIDER were sent for sampling.
