Racing Incident Report

STRATEGIC SELECT was a little slow to begin. FIGHTING MASCOT began awkwardly and got its head up. CHEERS WINNER began awkwardly and shifted out, then in the early stages proved difficult to settle. Shortly after jumping, ARMONDO became unbalanced after being crowded for room between NORTHERN FLYER which shifted out and ROUND THE WORLD which shifted in. In the middle stages, WISE CHOICE was obliged to race wide and without cover. On straightening, PERPETUAL PLEASURE was steadied when disappointed for running between RESOURCEFUL PRINCE and HIGH SPIRITS which shifted out. After the 200 Metres, NORTHERN FLYER was steadied away from the heels of ROUND THE WORLD which shifted in slightly. K S Yu (FIGHTING MASCOT) explained he had been instructed to ride the horse in midfield or a little bit further back. He said the horse previously had been ridden forward, however, at its last start which was on the All Weather Track from a wider barrier, it got back to race in midfield. He said on that occasion FIGHTING MASCOT closed the race off strongly, therefore it was felt today that the horse should be ridden in a similar manner, again in the hope it would close the race off. He said he obtained a nice run throughout the race, however, the horse failed to respond to his riding in the Straight. Apprentice C K Tong (ROUND THE WORLD), which was racing with blinkers re-applied today, said he was instructed that if the horse began cleanly, he should endeavour to ride it in around 6th position, however, if the horse was slow to begin, he should ride it patiently. He said ROUND THE WORLD began well, then in the early stages after initially being ridden along proved difficult to settle and therefore raced slightly further forward than was the intention. D Dunn (STRATEGIC SELECT) said the horse began only fairly and he rode it along throughout. He said after straightening STRATEGIC SELECT made ground for a short distance, however, near the 200 Metres became unbalanced and lost its stride. He said he was of the opinion STRATEGIC SELECT may have sustained an injury to itself and therefore he eased the horse down. STRATEGIC SELECT was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, STRATEGIC SELECT was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No significant findings were made. Before STRATEGIC SELECT can race again, it will be required to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and must pass an official veterinary examination. PERPETUAL PLEASURE, MY FAVOURITE and RESOURCEFUL PRINCE were sent for sampling.
