Racing Incident Report

After arriving at the Start, NO COMPROMISE, which had been trembling in the parade, was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon. He said in his opinion the horse was suitable to race. NO COMPROMISE began awkwardly, shifted out abruptly and bumped EL VIENTO. Shortly after the start, MONETARY STAR and LOK WAH SUCCESS were steadied when crowded for room between EL VIENTO and BARRACUDA which was taken in slightly by ILIKETOSMILE. Near the winning post on the first occasion, VIPER CORP and SIXTY SECONDS raced tight. Making the first turn, MONETARY STAR got its head up and raced awkwardly for some distance. Between the 600 Metres and the 400 Metres, TELECOM TYCOON was awkwardly placed close to the heels of TIRAMISU when racing tight inside FRENCH CONNECTION (K S Yu). K S Yu was severely reprimanded for causing unnecessary crowding to TELECOM TYCOON and told in similar circumstances he would be expected to relieve the pressure much sooner than he did on this occasion. For a short distance after the 400 Metres, EL VIENTO was held up and unable to obtain clear running. Near the 200 Metres, EL VIENTO was steadied when disappointed for running between FRENCH CONNECTION and TELECOM TYCOON, both of which shifted ground. To obtain clear running, EL VIENTO was shifted to the outside of FRENCH CONNECTION. LOK WAH SUCCESS, which was following, was steadied in consequence. At the 200 Metres, TELECOM TYCOON was bumped by SIXTY SECONDS which shifted out. After the 200 Metres, VIPER CORP, which was giving ground, was bumped on the hindquarters by LOK WAH SUCCESS which was endeavouring to shift to the outside of EL VIENTO to obtain clear running. Just prior to the winning post, FRENCH CONNECTION was steadied when crowded for room between MONETARY STAR and EL VIENTO which shifted in. Because of this, FRENCH CONNECTION was not ridden out to the end of the race. K S Yu said the intention had been to lead, however, FRENCH CONNECTION failed to muster speed as anticipated, was unable to cross runners to his inside and therefore was obliged to race three wide and without cover in a forward position. D Beasley (DRAGON'S ERA) said prior to tonight's race he discussed with Mr D A Hayes, trainer of the horse, the manner in which it should be ridden. D Beasley said it was decided that he ride the horse as he felt appropriate. He said he formed the opinion that should DRAGON'S ERA begin well, he would ride it in a forward position, otherwise he would ride it in a rearward position. He said when the gates opened, DRAGON'S ERA began well, he rode it along for a short distance and crossed to race outside the leader. He said once he obtained this position, he steadied DRAGON'S ERA and allowed TELECOM TYCOON to improve around his outside to provide him with cover. He said he continued racing in this position until near the 1000 Metres when FRENCH CONNECTION improved to race forward of him and he then shifted out to trail that horse, however, at the 600 Metres DRAGON'S ERA was a beaten horse. D Beasley's explanations for DRAGON'S ERA racing in a more forward position tonight were accepted. BARRACUDA was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, BARRACUDA was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No abnormalities were detected. FRENCH CONNECTION, TIRAMISU and SIXTY SECONDS were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 12 June 2003) :
DRAGON'S ERA was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer D A Hayes this morning. He said the horse was stiff in both front legs and showed significant muscle soreness over the rump. Before being allowed to race again, DRAGON'S ERA will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
