Racing Incident Report

CLAWS OF THUNDER was withdrawn on 13.6.03 on veterinary grounds (lame right hind) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter ACME OF SURPRISE (W C Marwing). Before being allowed to race again, CLAWS OF THUNDER will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. After being boxed, OPTIC CHIEF became fractious, lunged forward and broke through. When this occurred, ACME OF SURPRISE also broke through. Those two runners were quickly restrained, returned to the Start and examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said in his opinion they were suitable to race. When OPTIC CHIEF, which had drawn gate 7, broke through, it damaged the front gates of its stall. To avoid an unreasonable delay, all runners drawn gate 7 and wider were moved out one stall. Before being permitted to race again, OPTIC CHIEF and ACME OF SURPRISE will both be required to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test. PRODIGY was slow to begin. JOYFUL STAR began awkwardly and lost ground. Passing the winning post on the first occasion, LEAD TO WIN was awkwardly placed between PRODIGY and inside the heels of WINNING SUNSHINE. Shortly after this, WINNING SUNSHINE was steadied away from the heels of OPTIC CHIEF. This caused some inconvenience to PRODIGY. At the 700 Metres, SURE FORTUNE, which was ridden to hold its position, was checked when crowded for room by MAXIMUM JOY (A Marcus) which momentarily shifted in. A Marcus was reprimanded and advised to exercise more care. PROFIT TREASURE, which was following, was checked in consequence. For some distance near the 600 Metres, WINNING SUNSHINE was awkwardly placed close to the heels of ACME OF SURPRISE when racing tight inside JUST IN TIME. On straightening, PROFIT TREASURE was steadied and shifted out to avoid the heels of OLIVE OR TWIST which shifted ground. F Coetzee (OLIVE OR TWIST) said he had been instructed to lead or if another runner went hard in front, he should take a sit off it. He said in accordance with those instructions, when the gates opened, he rode OLIVE OR TWIST along to ensure it went forward, however, ETERNAL FUN, which had drawn to his inside, was also ridden along and went forward with him. He said passing the winning post on the first occasion he had reached the lead, he then allowed OLIVE OR TWIST to cross to the fence, did not ride it along, but did allow it to stride. He said in his opinion to have restrained OLIVE OR TWIST and taken it back at this stage of the race on tonight's surface would have been against the horse's best interests. F Coetzee did acknowledge the first section of the race was run in quick time, however, he said after this he was able to steady the tempo of the race on OLIVE OR TWIST and run what he felt were suitable times mid-race, however, the horse was beaten on straightening. He said while some might say he went too quickly in the early stages, he did not believe this wholly accounted for the horse's poor performance. The explanations of F Coetzee were noted. OLIVE OR TWIST was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, OLIVE OR TWIST was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No significant findings were made. WINNING SUNSHINE, ETERNAL FUN and LEAD TO WIN were sent for sampling.
