Racing Incident Report

Just prior to the gates opening, NORTHERN FLYER became fractious and had its head turned to the right hand side, then when the gates opened, reared and lost a considerable amount of ground. Prior to the start, KOWLOON STAR became fractious, was standing badly, then began very awkwardly and lost ground. EXCEL TRADER began awkwardly and bumped the inside gate of its stall. On jumping, MR PRESIDENT and LUCKY BIRD bumped. Near the 1300 Metres, NORTHERN FLYER got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of MR PRESIDENT. At the 1300 Metres, BROWN BEAUTY was steadied when racing tight between LUCKY BIRD and LOK WAH SUCCESS. On several occasions after the 400 Metres and again after the 200 Metres, MR PRESIDENT was bumped by LUCKY BIRD which got its head on the side and shifted in. Between the 300 Metres and the 200 Metres, TREASURE FIELD had difficulty obtaining clear running between TELECOM BABE and SILVER JET. Whilst the Stewards were satisfied the riding of D Whyte (TELECOM BABE) in the run to the line did not affect the horse's finishing position, they did however advise D Whyte he must ride all mounts out at least hands and heels to the end of the race whenever possible. D Whyte said he had been instructed to ride TELECOM BABE midfield with cover if possible. He said in accordance with these instructions he did not ride TELECOM BABE along in the early stages and shifted across with LOK WAH SUCCESS which was drawn to his inside. He said near the 1500 Metres he had a look to see if he was able to obtain a position behind LOK WAH SUCCESS, however, BROWN BEAUTY was racing in the position he hoped to obtain and therefore he continued to race without cover. He said when racing without cover after the 1400 Metes, TELECOM BABE began to pull very hard as it had previously shown a tendency to do and he then elected to allow his mount to stride forward and shifted to the fence in the lead rather than remain racing wide and without cover and fighting against the horse. The explanations submitted by D Whyte were accepted. EUPHORIC KID was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, EUPHORIC KID was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said there were no significant findings. BOUNTIFUL and TREASURE FIELD were sent for sampling. The Veterinary Officer reported following the race he had noted KOWLOON STAR had lost its left hind plate, EXCEL TRADER had sustained a cut to the left hind pastern and SILVER JET was displaying mild heat stress.
